Please forgive me for asking about anything other than E30's but im looking at converting an obviously automatic old 635 csi to manual. Will any other BM gearbox fit apart from one specificly for the 6 series?? Cheers chaps!

It's a fairly straightforward and popular conversion. The E24 is an interesting car, when it first came to the UK in the late 70s, it was heavily marketed as a proper executive sporting coupe, it became a "wafter" as it got older.
Best way to do it is to get an E28 535i and just swap the bits around
I just happen to have all the bits you need too.

Aah, they're a much better car as a manual, particularly if you live out of town. You can really use the engine and the originals with the sport gearbox were flying machines.
If it's a pre 88 metal bumper car you'll need a load of bits from an M535i - flywheel and clutch, gearbox, prop, pedal box (you only need the brake and clutch pedals). If it's a Highline with the E34 engine management I'm sure you can use an E34 box or one from an E28 525i/528i.
A manual box is the sensible way out of a troublesome automatic gearbox as well.

I just think they suit the auto box better. They're no sports car, more of a cruiser IMO!commando wrote:You like auto's??Rodderz wrote:Why would you do it?

never driven a manual e24
i'll trust andy with his views, i think with the right suspension upgrades they could be a good car as manual.
IIRC , if you use the late e28 M5 arbs' which are thinker than the m635csi's that makes huge difference combined with decent shocks and springs it should be a cracking car, but the yellow bistein are too stiff on our shit roads. the late M5's used boge dampers and progressive springs un like the M535i which use horribly stiff yellow bilsteins.
i'm sure Hartge did a good suspension set up for the e24's. i rember going out in black m635csi which was at Kevin Birds Garage and that was amazing, but it did have 330bhp conversion as well
