Went to rockingham to do the skid pan experience today, and I have to say was the most fun ive had driving a car! :D

Was a little dissapointed they gave me the 318i and not the 328i! :( But still an awesome car to drive!

It was so much fun! Would 100% recommend the experience!

As for the jockey wheels, the car is bolted to a frame with them on, so they can raise and lower it to give you less or more grip in certain areas! Just replaces the wet surface really! They change the heights all the time you are running.

i believe this (or a wet skidpan day) should be part of the driving test. or at least need to be done within 6 months of passing as it would be of more benefit with a little more experience beforehand.

how many people know exactly what to do in the event of understeer or oversteer?
to pass a test, you need to be able to remember the phrase "turn into the skid" but in reality, most people have no idea what to do should it happen on the road.

it looks like bloody good fun too :D

About a year ago, a girl from my school had just passed her test, and on the way to school on a wet morning, she understeered on a corner going head on into an oncoming car, Her Pug 306 burst into flames, killing her!
Ever since then her parents have been campaigning to get a skid pan experienece as part of the test, but with no luck!

I thought I had good skills from my karting experience, but it is amazingly different in a car! Still you get the hang of it, and its bloody good fun! :P

I couldn't agree more, these have been my thoughts for a long time!

is a skidpan used in the advanced driving test?

My 318i ( m10 ) was my first car when I was about 22. After a year of owning it I had already had a few spins ect which tought me to slow down and just control the car a bit better.

I'm not a very good driver compaired to some of the people on here , but I would agree something like this would have been brilliant to have to do in a test. I guess ultimately it's down to the cost and time of implimenting something like this in the national test.

Oli when are you going in to do your practical test mate? I didn't get the chance to talk to you and your buddy properly at the pod as I was so pre-occupied with the Alpina for my own good that day.

Totally agree with you. I'm actually planning to do one with a few mates sometime very soon - I'll be taking Han along whether she wants a go or not!

I'm glad you folks agree. i'm usually not for adding more red tape but surely training people in how to avoid an accident is better than making one more comfy in a modern car. it has to be safer to avoid a crash. hazzard perception is a start but it needs not end there.
