Was that after the build up on the first lap of the m25magpie wrote:i backed off at 125mph,it was my exit.
Clocked my old i.s. around 135mph near the redline , Unsure what diff was in it though , Not all i.s`s run the same diffs do they ?
Giggety Giggety Goo!!!
the iS only had a 4.10.. even if you had an e36 box you'd need near 3.25 so doubt it had a 3.64, but you never know
I'm willing to settle this top end debate. it's late, it's reasonably cool out & there's a stretch of road not too far away.
I am worried the old girl will explode, something will fly off or it'll shake itself to bits. I've never bothered with a top end run, not for the points I've just raised, I just enjoy cornering, I'm not a straight line fan tbh.

just want ed to pick up on this my is managed to hit the limiter in 5th with the 4.1 diff and still does with 3.9 diff maybe its just the fact that my engies fairly fresh.... ?oakey wrote:Bmw claim about 130mph off the top of my head. An IS won't get near the limiter in 5th gear.
Injections nice....but I'd rather be blown ;)
Genuinely with a 4.1 diff I've got about 120-125mph out of my IS during airfield track days, but it's not really a pleasant experience! It really helps you find out which wheels are slightly out of balance...
Edit, I don't think I was able to hit the limiter.

Standard iS at 136bhp will reach 131-135 (speedo reading) on level ground and that'll be more or less it.
a 150bhp one depending on if it got a chip or one of these iS claimed to be standard but giving 150bhp on the rollers will top out at about 145-150 on the speedo.
Been upto 145 on mine once and was still noticably pullling futher but had a centre prop bearing that wasn't in brilliant nick so didn't want to spend too long waiting to see what it could actually reach
Speedo over-reading taken into accound, I reckon that's about 120ish and and about 135 or so.
Friend of mine hit the limiter in 5th with a 3.91 with one of his old ones but speedo wasn't working at the time and didn't have a gps to see

M42 rightness above 6500rpm, nobody can hear you scream
yeh thats my problem no speedo at the time but seemed quite happy on the limiter in 5th with the 3.91 on a private road of courseDave_M3 wrote:S

you see fuzzy.. they say private roads.. what they mean is the public highway... they say this through fear of the finger waggers giving them a bolloking... people!! stop trying to be so coy about speeding on the roads... everyone does it... so the sooner you admit that these private roads are infact your nearest dual carrageway the better as far as i am concerned.. just speak the truth!! this is the internet ffs.fuzzy wrote:where are all these private roads? i just rip the 4rse out of mine on the motorway.
do i now have to do the zone thing and say ''rant over''??

I like euphemisms. Private road = motorway late at night/early in the morning.
Probably several more good ones like 'press on driving = thrashing the nuts off it' etc.

I realise the clocks are optimistic, but when I bottled it there were plenty of revs left. What, in theory, could I have done if I'd have kept it planted?
Bollocks to this 24v scrap!

The issue comes with the internet influences reality.e30bmlover wrote:you see fuzzy.. they say private roads.. what they mean is the public highway... they say this through fear of the finger waggers giving them a bolloking... people!! stop trying to be so coy about speeding on the roads... everyone does it... so the sooner you admit that these private roads are infact your nearest dual carrageway the better as far as i am concerned.. just speak the truth!! this is the internet ffs.fuzzy wrote:where are all these private roads? i just rip the 4rse out of mine on the motorway.

I remember on Pistonheads there was a guy who caused a very serious accident whilst on a bit of a hoon. The Police/prosecution saw the Pistonheads sticker on his car, did some research and subsequently found his username and all of his previous posts regarding him 'enjoying' the public road. IIRC they used some of it as evidence in his trial
Yeah, that's the thing. If the worst does happen and your in court, things in writing albeit on the internet will always be used against you if possible.
The iS speedos do seem very optimistic though... mine would go well into 150mph and maybe a little beyond it if let hit the limiter while Bob's M52 hits 141.
Surely BMW were just using it a scare tactic for 318iS owners to back off when looking at the speedo in case they they accidently went through the sound barrier

I have done over 130mph in my 318iS on the Autobahn between Nurnburg and Munich. There was a very slight gradient downward and the revs were pretty maxed. It can be done.
But to be honest - who cares when the way the silky twin-cam delivers the goods, coupled to the agile, perfectly balanced chassis always makes 325i owners swoon?
That's what really matters.

I'am i the only 318is owner who thinks there not that fast then
problem with them is they have no low down torque, sound shit and you need to rev the hell of of them in order to get some proformance from them

I'll be honest and say that they do feel nippy. Especially when i went from a 1.1 pug 106 to an iS it didnt feel half bad. But i still want more power!Alex wrote:I'am i the only 318is owner who thinks there not that fast then![]()
