The only thing that will make a difference to your acceleration or top speed is the ratio, matey. Whether it's an LSD or an open diff makes absolutely no difference.corkie wrote:will a 391 slipper make any difffrence top end or low end as opposed to my standard open diff, tia

Hi mate
Nice to meet you this morning.
Your current diff will almost certainly be a 3.64 so the 3.91 will make your car a little quicker when it comes to acceleration and rev slightly higher when in top gear on the motorway.
Have fun putting it in.

Basically, the higher the number the lower your gearing.corkie wrote:sory my car is a 325 cab,the diff currently fitted is unknown(tag unreadable) ,all i know is its a open diff,so im fitting a 391 slipper, just wonderd ,i dont realy understand diffs, that is apart from how the lsd works
For greater acceleration and, as a by product, a lower top speed or higher revs at the same top speed.....choose a lower gearing ie a larger number.
For slower than standard acceleration and a higher top speed (or lower revs at the existing maximum, choose a higher gearing ie a lower number.

Moving from a '73 (or a '64 for that matter) to a '91 will as jules says give you more sprightly performance (which is why the sports came with them) but you will see less MPG overall as it's revving higher.

Jules.... Every convertible 325i I've seen has had a 3:73 in it. Inc. that white cab Barry broke had a '73 LSD in it, mine had a '73 open and another couple I've seen had '73's. It was to give the heavier car the similar performance to the lighter 2 doors (which had '64's IIRC)

I've just fitted a 391 slipper to my touring and do find it a bit revvy on motorways. At 70 it is doing 3k

got a 4;4 75% lock one in my sport no good for motorways really but great fun and through the gears in no time, though the combination of sport box and this diff makes it pull well in all gears, good luck
