pump, injectors, or glow plug relay are a good starting point. i would take it to a diesel specialist for a diagnostic, saves time and money in the end!!!

sounds like it could have exsessive leak off on the injector's, take the pipe off the top of the injector (small T that conects all the injector's together) and then get someone to crank it over, there shouldnt really be any fuel comming out of the injector but you often find it flows out. this is a nice easy test. the commen rails will still start with a few glow plugs faulty and that engine dosnt suffer toooo bad with them more likly to be injector's. let us now what u find

i've changed loads of glow plugs amd glow plug relays due to non-start fault on these. Injector leak-off is a problem, but if he managed to start it from a push, then it suggests the glow-plugs are at fault. The extra compression you'll get from bumping the engine is just enough to heat up the diesel to run it.

The glow plug relay is switched by the DME, off the top of my head, i cant remember which pin/wire/connector its in

the inlet manifold has to come off to access the glow plugs. if you take it off, be very careful of the 11mm nuts that sit in between the manifold tracts. They are easliy dropped! There is a 10mm bolt that holds a lead to the manifold, right at the back. Thats a sod to get to! and remember to pull the vacuum pipe off the front of the m'fold before yanking it off, otherwise it'll snap! Also, order yourself a gasket set, as they'll break when you pull the manifold up. carefully pull the electric connectors off the plugs, and iirc, they are 12mm, but you need a long socket. they'll be tough to get out, but you dont need to hang on them when you put them back in. wrench tight, with a little 'tweak'

hope that helps

do these have a electric fuel pressure regulator? if so pull it out and check the little "o" ring seals on it.
was looking at a non starting merc sprinter van at work the other day. had low fuel rail pressure faults in the memory.
found the said seals damaged - replaced them and it started straight up!

the pre-supply pump under the car is most likely fault and the pre-supply pump relay, common fault

Hi got to look at this today the pre supply pump seems to be working fine getting nearly 4 bar from the prsupply pressure sensor. Only code I can mange to get is fuel pressure rail sensor open or short circut will this stop the car running. Car will no longer start on a push

have you checked for broken wires to the sensor?
it'll be a three wire sensor that screws into the rail somewhere. have a pull on the wires and check you have a live and earth on the 1+3 on the plug (2 being the signal wire).

this being faulty will certainly make it run in "get you home" mode and not start as well as it should cus the ecu will substitute the actual reading/value from the sensor to a "known safe" predicted value.
but it should still start and run ok. :?

does it have a rail pressure regulator that i mentioned earlier?

The is a pressure reg on the back of the pump but the pump was checked and was fine would assume the regulator would be checked at the same time

Went at it again today getting fuel as far as the pump , The pump has been tested don't know if the reg was checked aswell is there any way to check it. Theres no current faults but when I try to start it I get a fuel pressure fault really puzzled

Hi guys traced it back to the ecu afterwards was sending 5v to the signal line of the rail sensor my question is is it possible to get a 2nd hand dde to work in the car if so whats involved

Thanks for all the help

5v is what you should be reading. The DDE sends out 5v and registers whatever comes back as the measurement

If the sensor is at fault, the engine wont run at all because it doesnt know how much fuel is being injected

these diesels rely on constant pressure measurement in the rail, and iirc, they have pressure flow valve which allows quantities and pressures into the rail. If the DDE doesnt know how much is in the rail, its fail safe is no diesel at all, otherwise it would literally blow up!

id still go with the pre-supply pump and the pre-supply pump relay as this is a common fault and i have replaced loads working in a BMW dealer, it also aswell as non start gives long cranking and other times perfect running

I thought he said he was getting fuel to the high pressure pump? If he's got fuel to the pump and at the rail, the pre-supply is definately working!

There was 5v on both lines the signal from the ecu and the line returning to the ecu its definitly not a presupply issue as im getting good pressure and flow to the high pressure pump

sounds like a faulty sensor to me. The DDE omits 5v to the sensor. From 0v to 0.5v and 4.5v to 5v is for a diagnostic pre-function check, as in when you turn the ignition, all control units blast this down to all the sensors, to see whats working and what isnt. You shouldnt be getting 5v back from the sensor.

Try starting the engine with the sensor unplugged. This should allow the DDE to use a nominal value and allow the engine to run, contrary to what I said earlier, i think its the flow control valve that wont allow the diesel to start if cant read a plausible signal.

If the engines starts with the fuel rail pressue sensor disconnected, then i would be tempted to go for a new sensor

Have tried starting with the sensor disconnected and have also tried a sensor from another engine and had no joy with either thanks for all the info Stuart

right! out of interest, what are using to read the fault codes? I have found an increasing amount of false readings using other equipment apart from the BMW GT1 diagnostic computer. The Snap-on Solus scanners are fairly accurate, but even they can mislead you

Using the inpa software and carsoft both giving the same results will get a lend of a snap on solus if I can't get a gt1 if you reckon that could be causing the issue

Its possible mate, just trying to rule out possibilities if anything. You'll only come by a GT1 from a BMW tech or someone who's made their own! Snap on solus are popular among many techs out there who love a bit of private work!

Let us know how you get on
