got about 50 mostly motorway miles with the fuel warning light on driving normally (80-90mph) after running my bro home last night, ran out of petrol a mile from the in-laws, which was where i was going
the strangest thing happened though, in first gear the engine revved a bit but i didnt move
it was fine when i topped it up after being rescued by my sister in-law

I have had the car 2 weeks and it was off the red and the light was on when I picked it up so I went to get petrol and put Ԛ£20 in it and it went up to 1/4 of a tank
when it got on to the red again (light not on) I put another Ԛ£20 in it and it went up to 3/4 of a tank so I am a bit confused

i've done 30 miles in my 325 with the light on! not something i do often purely for that reason!
Is it a bad/silly feeling when u run out of squirt?! i haven't done it yet but theres plenty of time!
I've put just over 61 litres in once for a 62 litre tank, so i've come close!

err, what fuel light?
Thats not bad at all mate. The light comes on when you have 1.3 Imp Gallons left (i think!) so on my car it would probably be about 25 miles if i were lucky. Fortunatly it has never come to that!

Well mine is just to the left of the red part of the fuel guage. It is black normally and then lights up as an organge square shortly after the gauge goes past the red part.amaank wrote:um yeah, i might sound stupid, but where the heck is it?E30BeemerLad wrote:err, what fuel light?

well bugger me with a fish fork! I do have a fuel light, well I have foound the light, i have just never seen it on. I have run it down to the bottom line before. So where abouts does everyone's needle need to be before the light comes on as I don't fancy getting it off the gauge and running out to discover my light ain't workin

My light comes on when I go off the guage i.e under red.
In mine I can actually run the needle accross the orange light, so I know when i'm really low!
Ran out of petrol once (was kinda on purpose) had done 36 miles with the orange light on, but some of it was round town.
Once when I was travelling through wales late at night I think i did nearly 40, as all the petrol stations were closed
was using every hill though.....

and so while on this subject and with that excellent picture abouve just what is 'r' supposed to stand for? missus and i can only come up with 'reserve' - which it obviously isn't.....

I've seen that black cab - it also often sits outside the chemist in Crosshouse. It's a minter. I think it's a 320i.

The R stands for "REPENT"
You will do if you ignore the light
It's that or RESIDUE

There is NO nucleus.
maybe it's 'rust' - for that's what's coming through to the engine shortly after the fuel runs out...
it's not 'reserve' as there's no reserve tank - just the single fuel tank. there's no switching to reserve like on a bike either....

Couldn't it mean reserve even if there isn't a reserve tank? It mightn't mean reserve tank, just that you are down to the final "reserve" bit of petrol. Callled reserve because you shouldn't be relying on it to go anywhere, it's just to get you to a petrol station?placey wrote:maybe it's 'rust' - for that's what's coming through to the engine shortly after the fuel runs out...

I have no idea what it stands for but I'm not convinced yet that it couldn't stand for reserve.
