Ive seen a few painted diffs and none of the back plates are painted black is this to do with cooling or something?
Do they paint em silver for any reason?
I was gonna paint mine with waxoyl is this smart or do i want something else

This is the stufff i would use and apply with a normal 1.5inch paint brush

Get all the loose rust off with a wire brush then spray with hammerite, choice of colours too!

I wouldnt worry too much about heat as diffs dont get exactly scorching hot, i sprayed my rocker cover and inlet maniflod with hammerite hammered black (comes out a charcoal colour) and still looks good and fresh even with the excess heat of the M30.

As for the colour thats personal choice.

Its gonna probably be on the car when sprayed so paint on would be better

I'd do a price comparison with places like B and Q before you spend your pennies with Halfords, though.
