Hi
I've a similar issue myself.
I changed mine on the 316 a few years ago but installed a twin AA battery holder, along with a short cable, which was soldered to the correct parts on the PCB and relevant bridging of the ends.
Now that one had 2 x AA NiCad rechargeable batteries so I charged 2 new AA batteries and then inserted them in and reset the service and inspection lights, trouble free operation.
The reason I fitted the battery holder which is now situated behind the drop down panel where the driver's legs are, is if the NiCad batteries fail again you can just pop in two fully charged batteries and reset the lights again.
Now my new 320i pcb has 2 lithium 3V batteries which do seem to be available from one of my suppliers CPC. From measurements they're half AA size. now you can either change them in the pcb for the nearest equivalent and you will have quite a few years of use or you can use a AA battery holder and use AA lithium batteries instead which should be easier to obtain in the future.
I'm probably gona fit the battery holder on this one. I got all the bits except the batteries.
Price for direct replacement £2.96 each + VAT and some postage

Hijacking this thread a bit -but my rev counter suddenly stopped working this morning. Its constantly reading or stuck on 4500 RPM, MPG indicator gone too, service indicator lights working OK. Anyone any thoughts - does this sound like a battery problem? Really hoping it not a new clocks job.

Good news gaszman. :D

Mines not just a fuse - everything on else on the circuit OK.

Does anyone know if there are other simple things to check?
