Hi
The steering lock has broken on my sons E36 Compact.
Something has broken or come adrift between the ignition barrell and the switch at the other end of the lock. The key just goes round & round, the shaft that operates the ignition switch does not turn with the key.
I have been given another steering lock from an earlier car which does not have the transponder for the immobiliser, I'd also like to use the original key.

How do I remove the barrel? I see there is a hole at the side of the barrel but cannot see how to free the barrel.

Any advice would be gratefully received. Many thanks

on a E36, if you don't use the right key, or don't get it in right, the barrel spins round to prevent it being forced.

maybe just try a bit of lube and work the key in and out a bit?

There are videos on youtube, turn the key to position 1 and insert a small nail or 1mm drill bit into the hole, once its gone in far enough you can withdraw the barrel
