It is possible to do, but it is very costly. I think I looked at this option in 1998 and it was around the Ԛ£2K mark then!
When I was purchasing my first E30 convertible I made attempts not to look for an auto hood. They always go wrong and are very expensive to repair.
It is soooo easy with a manual hood. Just make sure that your tensioner straps are correct and the hood will fit back snugly into the compartment much quicker than the auto hood.

which are the tensioner straps Lizzie? When I take my roof down i have to fold the front section just before its all the way down otherwise the cover wont shut properly; is that just part of the technique?
