what would be the best one to start with as a base with an engine conversion in mind? is it the same as e30's with specific models and above having having rear discs and uprated suspension etc?

Probably best to start with a 528i or a 535i SE (M535i seems to carry a premium over these two)

525i models and above had rear discs.

LSD and M-Tec suspension standard on 535i and M535i

Dog leg 'box an option on the 535i - standard fitment on M535i

Some owners specced their 528i with LSD and M-Tec suspension from new, some were even specced with the dog leg 'box but these must be pretty rare.

What engine conversion are you thinking of???

as per my previous. ford cosworth. engine bay would be cleared and box ,ecu etc binned to us the cosworth stuff mated to an lsd with custon prop so id possibly be looking for the lowest spec model i could get with the rear discs and possibly uprated suspension etc.
just another idea at the moment. :D

here you go fuzzy

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/BMW-5-SERIES-E28- ... 286.c0.m14

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/UPRATED-E28-BMW-M ... 286.c0.m14

now i know that both of them are a far trek from you but if you are going to do it you might as well go in at the deep end.
yes the second one is a bit cheap (& a bit tatty) but for the price you could do a lot worse.
if it's got t*ts or wheels it's bound to be trouble...............prove me wrong.

interesting....
no doubt ripping apart an m535 to fit a ford engine would enrage the bufties. :D
why do people spend lots of money on uprating stuff but do nothing about rust holes apearing on the body? the second one would be cheap enough to remove the engine and sell to an e30 owner to make some cash back. looks like te brakes and suspension should be up to te job already. i dont want to be spending the usual sorts of cash ive wasted on previous projects plus i want something to do myself. im fed up paying shysters to to the job badly.

enrage the bufties?? ain't that what it's all about??

i once had a bloke have a go at me in the street all because i had alpina rep's on my sport.

as for the rust holes it all depends how bad they are but to some folk performance means more than looks.

im not to fussed about styling etc but i dont like it to be looking like a rusty shed or needing lots of upper body repairs.

The E28 isn't that much of a heavy car. As for which model to choose i would go for a low engined version.
The cost of buying one of these in comparison to an m535 would be better in the long run i would think.
That m535 mkit can hide a multitude of sins most of all rotten sills, frilly arches and jacking points.
There is usually an m535i breaking now and again on ebay, perfect ofr suspension, brakes, drivetrain upgrades.

after a quick look on the internet and e28 is 85mm longer 38mm wider but 83mm lower than a e30 touring. the e28 isnearly 150kg heavier though. thats the equivellent of a fat person as a passenger.
im sure it would still shift with 370bhp.

Seeing as the M5 with 286BHP does 0-60 in 6 sec it will be very quick.

I would be inclined to go for the best E28 body that you can find.
The better suspension bits that the bigger engined cars had can be retro fitted as you re-con the suspension to suit your taste.

Dogleg box was an option on the M535i, not standard.

They're not that heavy, but feel alot wider than an E30 to drive, I mean, they feel more than 38mm wider.

Thats correct Dogleg was a option some people prefer them some people hate it I for one like it. I sold a few dog box's and they were all for big engine conversions as they can take a lot of power.

I have found my sorted E28s handle nicer than my E30s, drift better too.

Feel better built and the parts and shells cost nothing compared with the E30 premium.

As said above dog leg was an option, i have seen a couple of m535i's with comfort seats too.

Do it fuzzy, it will be a cool and famous car.

(what about the silver cosworth touring btw?)
