Was browsing through some of the VeeDub mags in Smiths the other lunchtime and noticed all the Golfs with clinically clean engine bays (hidden wiring looms, smoothed everything, etc) Some of them did look

I've been a fan of euro styled cars for a good few years now. This is my personal favourite E30:

do you mean something like that? with some nice detailing or do you mean full on chrome coated engines with gold plated bolts etc?
PS that blue Cab is SICK!
EDIT: i just reread your post and I get what you mean now. that is very common on VW's but as you say, i too have not noticed much of that on BMW's. perhaps it is easier to do on the old Golfs cos they have much less complicated engines and less electrics to hide?

Germany! Thats about the only place they are readily available mate. My girlfriend just purchased a set for her MX-5 and although there are occasionally some for sale over here they are rare and are always snapped up at big money. If youre willing to risk it get them from EBay, thats what we did and we got a bargain

I'll second the motion of no VW slagging! I love Mk1 Golfs and used to own one. I love German cars in general and regard them all to be in the same family.. IE not Jap scrap

for me a euro look E30 would be an early metal bumper one which had been tidied and smoothed either sitting as low as possible on some phat Ronal Turbos or some really wide split rim BBS, no bigger than 15" mind you!

A set of VW fitting 13" Alleycat alloys. Gold cross spoke centres and chrome deep dish rims. Wicked wheels. Mabye a bit small for an E30 though ??

They were on my old e21 323i and looked sooo good. I think I should have had some sort of spacer thing in the middle of them though, but they still fitted.Kedge wrote:lets have some pics, right sized wheels for my E21!

F.A.O of all you sad golf fiends, i have a confession to make, i own a golf ! . Its a rivage cab that has been ravaged, some scumbag has 'chawed da leathers' so i'm on the lookout for a set of heated beige leather as per original . The car is a 1 owner with 44000 miles and it was Ԛ£250 , it is not recorded but has a few issues but at that price even i'll stoop to wrong wheel drive gayness!

Those were the kind of thing. The blue V8 is stunning altho i don't understand why the owner went to the effort of converting the front end to that.
I really fancy a Euro look E30. Facelifted with no kit but possibly a Reiger lip spoiler., slammed on some BBS RS1 rims.

to get a smooth engin bay these golf boys extend their loom by over a metre and re rout it through the chasis rails/legs!! time consuming it certainly is!

Why is it you never see oldies with modded/councilled front drive vdubs?. Because by that stage they have seen the light and bought a proper chariot !

well i do agree about FWD being much inferior to RWD but a suitably powerful FWD (ie one that has just the right amount of power and not too much) is great fun to drive. No oversteer but so what. if you get serious with a Mk1 Golf and mate 4x4 Syncro running gear and a 20V Turbo in it, the Golf will leave ANY E30 in its wake!!

Get a 325ix with lsds, a few suspension upgrades (which I am sure the Golf would need too) and an M5 V8 (maybe twin turboslideordie wrote:well i do agree about FWD being much inferior to RWD but a suitably powerful FWD (ie one that has just the right amount of power and not too much) is great fun to drive. No I do assure you that the Golf will still leave such a BMW in its wake! An E30 with a V8 in it is going to be anything but light, it will eat the VW top end but off the mark, the Golf will be bye bye! Watch this if you dont believe me:astondg wrote:You get a 325ix with lsds, a few suspension upgrades (which I am sure the Golf would need too) and an M5 V8 (maybe twin turboslideordie wrote:well i do agree about FWD being much inferior to RWD but a suitably powerful FWD (ie one that has just the right amount of power and not too much) is great fun to drive. It's just about money, you can make any car fast with enough of it.

3.1 secs to 62mph
It is all about money but within reason, theres only so far you can go with any particular car. You would need to spend 10's of thousands on an E30 to even equal that!
But lets not get into an argument about!!

Sounds more like a 1 all draw to me. So what your really saying is that a seriously modded Golf (that doesn't even have the same drivetrain) would "leave such a BMW in its wake!" as long as you only raced in a straight line and from a standing start until a speed just before the BMW catches up.slideordie wrote:No I do assure you that the Golf will still leave such a BMW in its wake! With AWD you don't need a light car to be quick to 60mph. The STIs and Evos aren't light but they get there in those sort of times with around 600hp. Around 450hp to 500hp should be enough for an E30 (early ones were only 1090kg standard). Maybe an M5 V8 was the wrong choice. How about a turbo 3.2L S52? Not as heavy and easy get 500hp with some moding. That is trying to stick with BMW stuff. Personally I'd probably go for a Cosworth 2L Turbo or something, that would add much weight and can give big power.
I actually wan't talking about straight line anyway, I thought you meant a race track.
Like you said though, no arguments! I wouldn't pick an E30 to do this anyway, I could think of a lot of cars that would be better suited. I was only meaning that I thought it was really pointless to discuss it because any car can leave any car in its wake, just takes money.

I appreciate what you're saying, it was a stupid discussion to have! I guess I just have a very soft spot for VW's and I had to stick up for them!
