Access the motor from the engine compartment.

An access hatch is on the firewall directly behind the engine.

Easy to replace the fan.
Open the bonnet and remove the panel on the bulkhead-about 6 x 6mm bolts from memory.
Fan is located inside there and is secured in place with a single spring clip.
About an hours work max to change over :D

Err, Are you saying you took that dash out to change the fan motor? If you are then you should open the bonnet and remove the access panel on the bulkhead and take it out of there.

There's an access panel in the bulkhead on the engine bay side!
You will need to remove the engine loom holder thingy on a four pot to see it.

Not an ideal shot, but you can see the hatch open!

For the Tacho, check that the pins in the c101 connector are making contact, or even in the right sockets.

Its the big round multi plug in the engine bay that connects the engine loom to the car loom. Its usually attached to the bulkhead near that access panel for the fan motor!

The pins may be in a different pattern on the M40 to the M42. Not sure, but worth checking.

Pin pattern is the same, but check out my "wiring warning" sticky in the engine swaps forum. (Probably too late now for this particular swap.)
A poor connection at pin 9 (black wire) will kill the tacho, but another possible cause is the possibly knackered batteries on the SI board in the cluster finally giving up their attempt to cling on to life, when they were starved of their charging voltage while the main car battery was disconnected during the engine swap.

Measure the voltage across the batteries. The batteries are either AAA sized NiCd cells, each 1.2 volts, or slightly shorter lithium cells, which are 3 volts each, and have metal tags on each end which are soldered to the circuit board.
