Are there any "must read" books explaining the principles and practices of forced induction that could be of some use to someone perhaps contemplating going blown?

As per Baptie0, "Forced Induction Performance Tuning" is a must have book that covers both turbo and supercharging in reasonable detail.

Corky Bell's "Maximum boost" is also very good, but only covers turbochargers, not superchargers. You'll need his other book "Supercharged" to cover both.
I'd recommend "Forced Induction Performance Tuning" as the place to start if you don't yet have any of the above.
