Hi,

Replacing my Cambelt last night, I managed to successfully do the job with one tooth out on the cam shaft, My permanent markings were not as permanent as they seemed!

I turned the car over several times by hand and there was no contact that i could feel.

I then proceeded to start the motor up and it idled but a had a ticking noise. On later inspection it appeared that the timing was one tooth out.

Will any/long term damaged be caused by the cambelt being one tooth out??

Any help would be gratefully received.

Gareth

Mental notes: Use tip-pex and stop before it gets too dark!

If the belt stays in that position i wouldn't think it could do any more damage than what it already has.

Does it run properly?

Why did you not just fit it correctly, and use the timing marks which are on the crank and the cam pulley?

Because i for one could not see any timing marks on the upper pulley. Any help identifiying them would be good. The bottom pulley has a mark.

The top pulley does not seem to have one.

The engine idled smoothley but noisey, it did not feel like it was running well when I blipped the throttle.

There's an arrow in one of the holes of the cam pully that lines up with a dot punch mark on the front face of the head. If your rocker cover gasket is leaking it may be covered in oil.
There is NO nucleus.

Its a 325i 1986.

I will look for marks, dig out the old torch! Just keeping my fingers crossed that nothing has been damaged!

It did run and start 4 times before i decided it was enough! So it cant be that bad. Only one way to find out..................

Cheers
