I started getting a few quotes today from companies I know usually do a pretty good deal on the soarer and the wife's 16V golf, but I've been surprised with the 3 quotes I've had so far have been unacceptable as far as I'm concerned.

Ranging from £595 to £795 for fully comp.

So who are you using?

So far I've tried Performance Direct, Sky and HIC.

I plan on giving A-Plan, Lancaster, Footman James, Richard Egger a try.

If the quotes i have been seeing are anything to go by and I'm 35 in 3 weeks time with 10 years NCD, then yours will be truly eye watering lol

Oh god  oh well. im used to expensive insurance i spose!
What about Greenlight, Adrian Flux, Graham Sykes, Brentacre or bell?
Ive got a mate with bell who has a saxo vts running at 190 bhp (including nos) all declared on his insurance and he was quoted £1200 fully comp including a quote for a supercharger iirc - at 19/20 years old with bell! i dont think it will be too bad for an m50.

all insurers seem to have different approaches, some just take the donor car and add a 40% loading others seem to look at the % increase in power over the original engine, which in my case is over 100% :)

Can you do it on a classic/modified policy? If you have a second car there are a range of classic policies.

I need to get mine on a proper policy soon, just using my trade policy on it ATM which doesnt give much cover really
I used to use AF and performance direct, play them off against each other first and you can usually get a decent reduction, I managed to get it £500 cheaper than my renewal by moving to performance direct (my licence was very dirty at the time) :)

Performance Direct were the cheapest at £595, HIC were the worst at £795, Sky came in the middle (i have the soarer with them which is £350 fully comp on a group 20 car) they did say to come back to them if anyone beats them, so I will be following that invitation up once I've found a banzai quote.

I must add that I have been doing this properly and declaring everything

1500 fully comp as a second policy (no NCB to apply but they mirrored the 4 years that I had on the main car)

thats with 4 pots up front, different dampers, springs, arbs, wheels and the S50 engine/box and zm3 diff all declared.

was only 22 when I took out the policy too

The folly presented me with a few problems as it was on French plates...
I chatted the pleasant young lady up at Bracknall winkeye and suggested that her letter would indicate that the car was a 325i(it left the factory as a 320i!)so when the insurers asked the capacity I was able to confirm it was a 2.5..... :D

I would have thought a limited miles/second car policy was always the way to go on a modified vehicle - you don't want to be paying to insure any use you aren't getting out of the car. I would have thought 'classic insurers' might be prepared for just such things - after all, there are plenty of modified old cars out there, innumerable old steeds have had rover v8s stuffed in them, or a big valve head at the same time as hardened valve seats - these cars are presumably still insured through such 'classic' channels.

The classic policy would be my route as it's a second car. I may be wrong but last time I spoke to lee aboutthe touring he was leaning towards using it as a daily. Think that's why the limited milage route isn't suitable

I've had that backfire on me before mate, an insurer I took cover out with on the soarer then asked for written proof of the low quote I got from a competitor, luckily I had not lied and was able to provide them with teh written quote which they had price matched on.

Ive been asked for 'written proof' before, so got back to the insurer who said "its not our policy to give out written quotations" which you can understand really as they would lose the customer

Adrian Flux wanted over £750, so they are out of the game.

One of the problems is I have to quote this as a 2nd car and can't use my 10 years NCD from the soarer as the policy for that will still be running until I sell it. Also, as I am looking to use the touring as a daily with a mileage allowance of 10k per annum, this obvoiusly causes some scary premiums

£499 is more like it, but I'm sure I can do better

I've only got of the phone to "A.Flux" and "Sky" .
After an initial renewal of £517 f/c on the m30, from A.Flux, i've been playing them both off each other, ad have now got my excess down by £50 and my new quote of "Sky" is £300 f/c.
2 days work for £217 saving.
Try Sky.

Tried Sky already Rav (I have the soarer with them for the last 3 years), they will be the last place I call to see if they will price match my lowest quote. I'be already had a quote from them at £599.

you can't share NCD from another car, if anyone has done this with their own insurance they need to speak with their insurers as you'll get well & truly stiffed if a claim arises and they ask for proof of NCD.

If you have NCD on another vehicle then it stays with that vehicle/policy. All I can do is tell them what a good boy I've been with my 10 years NCD on the Soarer, it is then at their discretion how much introductory discount they give me.

When I sell the soarer and cancel the cover on that, I could then move my NCD across to the touring

How the f*ck do they get away with these stupid rules?
The way I see it - you get a discount rate because you havnt made a claim over so many years, how can this be restricted to one car?
I have a trade policy I use for cover on my E30 ATM, I plan on getting a classic policy soon for some proper agreed value cover, so would I be able to have a discount for not claiming?

I have been on a trade policy for 11 years. No claims and second driver on the wifes car for 5 years no claims again. I still have zero no claims when I ring for quotes for my toys. I am with you on this dan in total I should have 16 years no claims but instead it's up to the company to decide if I deserve a discount. It's not on

Brent acre did say that they would mirror the dicsount for my NCD even though it wasn't available for transfering (still in use on the main car) although i did have to provide written proof that I had the NCD and that it was on use on the car that I said it was within 14 days, although they did offer to speak to my insurer for me if they refused to provide me with proof

i know you want to go about it in right way but would they know if you had two speedos . 5k a year on each speedo and you could tell them you are only doing 5k a year total . As long as you use the same one for each MOT and the milage showed as 5k a year . it wouldn't be taking the pee pee to much as you are already declaring that you running an m50 / m52
