Now can anyone explain why the US 325i doesn't appear to have this sensor, and the E36 325i does?

Welcome back!

Thanks for the exhustive list above. I might be able to explain the US 325i issue as it is really a 325e, just badged 325i for the US markets, but according to your list above the "e's" used blue temp sensors as well. My son on this forum has a US 325i.
