Autoglym

I know over the years people have said Autoglym isn't very good but Ive just been told about a couple of product and as Halford has 3 for 2 on at the moment I thought I'd give some a whirl.

The Engine and Machine cleaner is great....with only a bit of brushing my engine bay looks so much better

The interior shampoo has brought the carpets/mats up like new

The vinyl/rubber dressing Ive not used yet.

Only cost 10 quid for the 3

i still use their stuff regularly, it might not be the best stuff in the world, but their products offer a great quality / price ratio and are almost always nice to use.

the engine and machine cleaner is a good degreaser, but pretty paintwork friendly, i have found other products better on really manky parts, but you have to be a lot more carefull when using them. always got a big tub of super resin polish in my kit too.

Its all good stuff autoglym, apart from the green bodywork shampoo stuff its complete crap

vynal rubber dressing stuff is good too, tyre black is very good aswell, the foam one doesnt seem as good but the spray though

if you look in the boot of my car it looks like i'am an autoglym salesman

ive just got a halfrauds trade card, so i might be able to get some stuff cheaper but i doubt it works on the car cleaning products

Still use mostly autoglym products. For the price you can't beat it.

On a related note, is Autoglym Extra Gloss Protection any good? Does it 'attack' the paint like a normal polish, or merely leave a coating? The latter is the sort of product I'm after - I don't want to wreck my paint by overusing a polishing product.

The extra gloss is like a seal type product. It's non-abrasive and leaves a wipe on buff off coating on the paint. I've used it over to top of ultra deep shine in these pics. I was just trying it out so didn't give it the 30-60 min drying time reccomended on the back of the bottle!

I think Mag's do a glaze and seal too. My mate swears by it and he's managed this:





But then he is a bit OCD with it. Shiney tho.

Honest John reckons that you need to apply one coat of Auto Glym super resin followed by four (four!) coats of extra gloss (see Sat Telegraph Motoring letters 15 Aug).

Hard work I reckon, worth it though if you have the time.

I read that, but he's generally full of sh1t in my experience. He's obviously paid by Hyundai, Auto Glym and Halfords, amongst others - the 'Honest' in his nickname is supposed to be ironic I reckon.

I was under the impression, over the last few years, that autoglym products were pony so have avoided and stuck to Macguiars (SP?). Ive been using their 3 stage polish which is fantastic

I think their stuff is ultimately quite good but hard work. Iirc, the super-resin polish (or was it the extra gloss - can't remember now) should be left for an hour to cure! Great if you have time on your hands.

I've had consistantly good results from Meguiars, as such I continue to use/recommend them.

Couple of weeks down the line...how has it lasted in your opinion?

Looks good, semi-permanent so ought to last well.

Easy to apply, bit of buffing to remove and has to cure/dry for an hour, but I think it's a good finish, better than anything I've used in the last 15 years and not that expensive.

I just bought some cheapo turtlewax stuff- claims to have Brazilian carnauba in it, but for 9 quid for 500ml I reckon it must be the tiniest tiny amount in the history of miniscule fractions. Haven't had a go with it yet. I couldn't be bothered with the hour ti set Autoglym stuff, but I'll probably try it one day. Not too bothered about the shine, so much as the paintwork protection. Haven't tried the wax yet - weather has been pants arround here lately, and it takes ages for the sun to turn round and get the car in shadow for washing/polishing etc.
