Guys,

Been approached to do this conversion for a mate and wondered if this has been done before? It is for a track dedicated E30.

They have a whole E46 330i (Petrol) manual which has been totalled but the engine and running gear is all spot on.

Considering all the loom, ECU, keys, etc, etc is there, anyone know what needs to be done to get it all into an E30? They do have access to a diesel 330 too, which I suggested to use that winkeye but alas, they are petrol heads and want the petrol engine.

I am guessing sump/oil pump issues already?

EWS can be omitted I know, but any other advice would be greatly appreciated.

Paul.

Modified E36 crossmember would sort 90% of the fitting issues out, not a five minute job and some re welding required after chopping the top hats off the donor sub, stock suspension geometry can be retained too, bonus !

the PAS rack would require something custom, but a BMW parts bin and some minor fab should see that issue resolved.

M54B30 with no cats, hmm I like it !

The ol' fly by wire throttle could be interesting I guess?

hello paul,
i used the e34 m50 sump on my s54, i imagine the m54 block to have the same sump bolt pattern between m54/s54 ?
i also used an e36 m3 3.0ltr oil pump with an e34 m50 pick-up pipe.

a guy local to me has one of these in an e30.

Physically geting it in is the same as any m5x/s5x so you need e34 sump etc.

the brake servo shouldn't need moving just use the clio or golf one.

I think the guy is running std management but with the ews and drive by wire throttle removed from the ecu. will try to find out more.

Thanks guys! Looking do-able, but as mentioned by Jon, then fly-by-wire throttle could be an issue, but I am sure the pedals and potentiometer could be made to fit the E30.

I did wonder about the E34 sump and pump thing, so thanks for confirming that Glenn and mr_dink. I am guessing the whole ABS and DSC could be transferred over making it a pretty trick E30, but as thats not needed, I'll look into having that disabled within the ECU so it stays happy. I suspect the the ABS/speed sensors are totally different, infact I know they are, between E30 and E46. But transfering over the instrument pack isn't really an issue.

Anything is possible, but it's how far do you go. I guess thats upto time and money.

This is to be done as quick as possible, but I suspect it's going to be a long drawn out job lol.

Will keep you all updated, even if it isn't going to happen. :D

Ive put the brakes on mine until I get another E30, most of the works done just needs a bit of ally welding and bolting back together. There is a good thread on R3V where a guy has designed vanos controllers and what not, I doubt you would want to go that route though :)

The guy I know is defintely running a cable throttle and e30 pedalbox. Will try to find out how he's done it for you.

Would it be possible to run it on m52b28 (double vanos) management with a custom chip? Like Glenn's S54 which is running s50b32 management?

for a track dedicated car, I'd opt for the sump in the OEM position, less chance of oil starvation for defo , yes more work to achieve this but almost always worth the extra sweat and tears.

I take it the sump is as the M50/S50 arrangements - in the way of the E30 crossmember?
Would this be an opportunity to mod the firewall, gearbox tunnel etc to mount the engine as far back as possible?? winkeye

Your right James, molesting the bulkhead on a track car would be much more beneficial :D
