Good morning gents.
Was under the car with my mate yesterday trying to locate a knocking coming from the rear passenger side, after finding that when I take a right hand bend at speed there is a harsh knocking noise and the rear steps out a little. So I pushed the car about and found it to be the exhaust knocking on the suspension. At first we thought it might be an exhaust rubber perished but then we noticed that the inside tread of my brand new tyres were as bald as my 20 year old model ex-girlfriends growler.
Knowing nothing about the ins and outs of suspension I just shrugged my shoulders and adjusted my calvins, but my mate with his limited knowledge thought it was probably the rear bushes??? Could this be the case? Will the back end of my car fall off like Sheriff JT Justice in Smokey and the Bandit? How much and what are my options for new bushes and how easy/hard are they to replace?
Cheers

Wasnt it Sheriff Buford T. Justice??
The inside of the tyres will wear more than the outside because of the angle the wheel sits at, especially on a lowered car. But if its that bad then I would check out the bushes, because you may have a worn out rear end
Could also cause some tail happy moments.
Ive got mine to do, but Ive heard some can be a right PITA to remove.

Ah yeah thats the one...I was close though!
To be honest, I have only got the arse out once in the bm, too scared of breaking it. the car is dangerously low, but unsure as to what a bush looks like. The hairy variety is my speciality...but on a motor I have no idea.

bushes are cheap
fitting them is a pain in the ass and can be expensive... might as well get them all done to sort your rear end problem inc eccentric arm bushes to reduce neg camber
prolly be about Ԛ£200 all in..

is it dropped 60mm on the rear mate? anything lower than 40 on the back will munch tyres
both jobs are an utter arshole to do so pay someone who know what they are doing!
eccentrics are Ԛ£25 per side!
Might be an idea to check those top mounts too, they cause alot of noise clonking when gone. E46 M3 cabs are the ones u want for dropped cars

Thanks for all the info guys..
Simon yes it is lowered 60mm I think, was like it when I got the car. Fitted with PI springs which I plan to change for some 40mm's.
So I need the poly kit, the eccentric bushes and new top plates plus someone to fit it all? Ouch, better show the wife some loving I guess if I'm to be allowed to get it sorted.
Thanks for your help fellas.

Won't need the poly kit if you are getting the eccentrics, you will only need the ARB buhes and the main beam subframe bushes.
tis funny, my touring is lowered loads at the rear (wheels up in the arches) and the camber seems ok on it, yet it don't have eccentrics in it, at least I don't think it does..

now my car is completely rebushed the 35mm drop is having no adverse effect on the camber it seems.
Poly bushes are for people who like to have no ride quality! best used on track IMO
Worn roll bar drop links will have no effect on camber just more roll when cornering me thinks
This is my thoughts!
change subframe bushes for genuine bmw ones bout Ԛ£150 to get done. Would get this job done first.
40mm springs ( would recommend pucker H&R -35mm ones Ԛ£110 to your door!)
e46 m3 cabriolet top mounts Ԛ£14 each.
This would sort your camber and steering from the rear feel, probably will handle alot better in the wet and dry too, as 60mm is too low on the back for good handling IMO. U shouldn't need ecentric trailing arm bushes. Triailing arm bushes are as good as gold and about the only e30 bushes which don't wear really!
Thats quite a bit of money already, but how are your shocks?

I have no idea mate, I have no idea when it comes to engine or suspension. I'm going to give it to a guy round the corner who specialises in BM's at the weekend and ask him to give the whole car a once over and tell me what needs doing. Will get a 3nd opinion just to be on the safe side too.

I have polyurethane so far on the front control arms (M3 offset), front strut top mount bits and rear trailing arms and I didn't really notice any ride quality or harshness problems. I haven't done the rear subframe ones yet, those might make a bit of a difference.

I expect your roads are alot lot better than here!
Poly subframe don't make any difference really.
Trailing arms won't either IMO
Top mounts will and control arms- all i know is don't bother with poly engine mounts or gearbox ones will shake your car to death!
