Which wiring loom have you connected the switch to?

On the E30, the reverse lights are on the body loom. You need to connect the original E30 reverse light wiring to the E36 switch in the gearbox.

On the E36, the reverse lights are on the engine loom, so when fitted into an E30, you will have a spare wire/plug (that runs down with the 02 sensors wires), that would of been for the reverse lights on the E36. This wire can be removed or just taped up and tucked away somewhere.

hi i connected it to the e30 body loom , and replaced the e36 switch with one i had in an old e28 dogleg gearbox , as the e36 one has three pins and the e28 switch only has two pins , it just seems a bit strange that the reverse lights are not on when the gearbox is in neutral and come on in any gear including sixth gear :(

I think you'll find you've connected into the gear recognition switch, not the reverse light switch. See below:

thanks for picture ian i will have a look tomorrow i think the top switch in the picture was the one that i changed for a two pin switch as i did it before i put the gearbox in , if i remember rightly the plug for the gear recognition switch comes off the s50 loom and is a standard bmw plug and the e30 reversing switch loom is just like two spade connectors which go in through the rubber gear gator

The gear recognition connections are just a pair of spade connectors with a black rubber cover that fits over the end of the switch. The reverse light connector is a fairly standard 2 pin connector (like a water temp sender).

Ideally, you'll fit a suitable connector on the E30 wiring, and plug it in. Failing that, you may be able to find a suitable switch with a pair of spade connectors.
