Can anyone recommend me an exhaust?

I need something that gives a reasonable sound and is not too loud, as I plan on doing plenty of trackdays so it needs to pass noise limits! I don't want anything boomy!

Preferably something lighter than the stock exhaust if possible, and something which hopefully gives a slight power increase or improves drivability. I want something that looks subtle too, so no silly oversized tailpipes please!!

Needs to be good quality at a reasonable price. Sub £500 if possible.

It will be from 6 branch manifold back and is to be fitted to a 2.7 M20 engine.

Is it worth going for aftermarket or am I better sticking with a stock 325i exhaust?

Any advice would be much appreciated!

Thanks,

Phil

Our 325 came with a full length stainless exhaust by Longlife. I'll dig out the details from the folder that came with the car if you like. It sounds fantastic, and the previous owner reported a noticeable change in driveability. The sound is very non-chav, not boomy at all, but just adds a sharper edge to the noise at full load and really howls at the top end. I'm looking forward to seeing how it sounds with the M50 that we've just put in the car.

Although I've not actually owned one, I have experienced a Scorpion full system on a 325i and it seemed pretty good. Well made and not too loud at all. Plus, it had relatively subtly sized tail pipes..

Had a LongLife system fitted to my 325 last week. Specifically made for the car, and tailored for trackday noise limits. Comes out at 90db in their back yard which is quite small with walls on all sides. So confident it'll get through the strict 84db limits.

Cost £330 all in from manifold back and looks excellent, really well made. Sounds excellent, not the usual BMW sound at all, but with 6 branch and huge cam it didn't sound like that in the first place.

Having said that, LongLife is a franchise. Mine fitted at Bristol, other fitters may be different.

I've just had a Powerflow exhaust made and fitted to my M3 by Top Gear Racing in Aylesbury...

They did a very good job in terms of the workmanship, the parts all look top quality and the system fitted all my requirements (x-pipe, standard looking tailpipes, noise, cat delete, etc)...

Obviously it has only just been done, so I can't comment on the durability, but it does have a lifetime warranty...

They will make it to sound like you want, or as close as possible, and the cost for mine was £670 all in...

That's a pretty good recommendation!

He mated one of those cheapo Hottuning manifolds to a lovely single pipe system he made. Really light and not too loud. Well worth a look and Kevin knows far too much about exhaust tuning.

This echos my point about franchises. The powerflow system i had made in Gloucester was awful and pretty much beyond repair within 18 months.
