I have been looking at E34 M5s (out of curiosity). I was under the impression that all m5s were fitted with the S38, in either 3.6 or 3.8 form, but I've seen some (up to '91) fitted with 3.5 motors.

I'm guessing this is the M88 engine from the E28, but I had no idea it was used so late, surely this means the b36 was only used for about a year and a half before the b38 came along?

Seems like a bit of a waste of development time and money?

No the M88 was never used in the E34. It was 3.6 and 3.8 S38 only. Technically the S38B36 is a 3.5.

The 3.6 looks like an M88 though with its throttle bodies and plenum.

Ah ok - purely me being mislead by the 'B36' bit :thumb:
