Guys i am 99% sure about a buying a very nice spec 1999 low miles 840.
It will stand me at £8250 bargin or what.
There is nothing to do to this car just jump in and drive.
Will i stand to lose a lot of money due to buying at the thick end of the market, are they a good buy.
Any info most welcome

Sounds rich to me as well. It is a 10 year old 8 series with nitoriously expensive parts. You are buying it at an age, where EVEN more things are going to be going wrong...

It is clearly a cool car, but I would struggle to justify £5500 for anything other than an 850 csi.

Well I wouldnt class myself as "in the know" but I'm shrewd enough to spot a bargain, which I dont here :D The price sounds reasonable to me, but not a bargain.....

Prices for them are all over the shop, having had a quick glance. I suspect it is due to their relative rarity. No one really knows what they are worth! Some old snotters are probably up for £13k waiting for a victim with far more money than sense...

Apart from image, are they really better than a 540i sport which can be picked up for £3-6k?

Mostly autos too.... :gay:

I think they look great and they are part of bmws history for sure, but like you say what do you pay for a nice 1.
His reserve was £7500 which was fair due to the work he has done.
He is a policeman and sounds like a good chap selling this 840 to buy a very very low miles example.

A much nicer shape Jon! Watch out for leaky steering box's and brake issues with these cars, it's all well and good having the £££ to buy one but you will need some to fix it too, and it will go wrong at some point!

I will have an 850/840 at some point, just to enjoy the experience, but not for a few more years yet. They are an undeniably cool car, well until you pop up the headlights.

I still remember seeing a calypso? one in a traders lockup with some huge dished BBS wheels around 8 years ago. I have wanted one ever since.

Tom, turdos just went straight through its MOT, no advisors etc etc. If only an e30 was as easy. :P

Few things I picked up from the advert:

He mentions it had 4 new tyres, great, but later goes on to mention how it will need the rear two changing soon!

Air con needs a regass...

2 rear shocks, now this is make or break really...

Looking at real OEM, a shock seems to vary from $146 for non mtech up to $486 for mtech, priced each. That sounds reasonable I guess, BUT if it has EDC they are a mere $1,459 EACH! :)

He does seem to be sorting the other problems, but swaying away from changing the rear shocks, I wonder if it has got EDC? 8O The reason for selling is not great either, he wants a red 840i. Would you really take a chance on an unknown car so that you can get your favourite colour...

Perhaps I am being negative, but that is what runs through my mind...

Yes the red 1 has 22,000 on the clock good reason i suppose if it genuine.
All tyres have been sorted,he has done everything aside from rear shockers will do if i pay for em does not want to spend anymore on the car.
Its the normal onces.
Only thing i dont like about the deal is the short mot its until oct.

What does it mean when the highest bidder has 100% bid history with the seller.

In the case of this particular item, it means that Bidders 2 and 4 have only bid on items being sold by the seller (ozder2006) ever. ie 100% of their bids are with ozder2006.

It could mean that they have never bid on an item before and therefore will have zero feedback or they are shill bidders.

Only Ebay can prove the second scenario conclusively.

I note that Bidder 1 only went to £4500 and Bidder 2 to £7500, both of whom have placed bids with other sellers in the past.

You draw your own conclusions and bear in mind what has been said above already I think.

Almost right RM2186, it is over a given time scale that they have a 100% activity. I think, but don't quote me, that it is a 30 day period. If they haven't bid on anything else for 30 days it will show up as a 100% activity with the seller. Due to them hiding the names of bidders it is potentially more difficult for an outsider to spot shill bidding, but do ebay really care as long as they get their Final listing fee? Errr nope.

Doesn't matter how shiny and Zymolled it is - a '99 840Ci needing a £1000+ air con rebuild (that's what they cost to fix), £2000 worth of rear EDC shocks and £500 worth of tyres ain't worth a bean over £5000.

These things are money pits. I was lucky enough to buy one years ago from a main dealer with the BMW warranty and whilst it was nice to drive it wasn't all that exciting. I wouldn't touch one now.
A Mercedes R129 SL is a much, much better idea.

When you get to sell this one at the other end of the ownership experience, it will have to be 100% to get the sort of investment money you are putting into it, and hoping to get at the other end. This will be an expensive car to maintain and fix.

The bidding profile is not right either, I'd expect that some of it is shill bidding, so that the final price is in the right area.

And policemen, love 'em, but would you buy a used car from one!

Be very careful mate..

A few years ago I was on a trip to Hamburg, and the BM dealers there had a Dakar yellow one, with yellow and black nappa interior. I might even be tempted by that one...
