I'll be interested to read how you get on. It has occurred to me that I may have to go back to the 36mm if I can't find an obvious problem with the feed from the tank to the vapouriser.stonesie wrote:He says that they fit 36mm venturis to 3.5L range rovers with no ill effects, and that he will exchange it if causes me any problems... those rover V8's are not exactly high on bhp but they still shift some air at full chat so im sure it will be fine, he also said that it biggest they can do that will fit on the inlet of a bosch AFM is 38mm
My M20 B28 build, 200+ bhp/tq now bits to deal with it

Nah It's been burning about as much oil as petrol and theres a massive carbon build-up on there... I'm not using that set of pistons anyhow, theyre scratched to foook so theyre bin fodder.
I have been doing more prepping and painting today and got round to some pics, excuse the messy garage, every time i tidy a space my dad fills it

The blue bits... Im never buying blue hammerite again, it runs better than most of our olympic team.

Wet paint written on there because my dad managed to get paint on his entire hand and send that plate crashing to the ground
He had stood and watched me spraying them ffs.

Rocker and manifold sprayed up, i'm yet to laquer the manifold but i like the look of it, it kept me 'entertained' for a bit sanding the alloy down on the raised bits
Those halfords colour match cans are JUST big enough for this job if you give it all a couple of coats.

Crack on that man! Its worth all the effort
I can't wait, got a 4 day weekend comeing up in a couple of weeks so I have made that my deadline, local hire company will do me an engine crane for a week including dropping it off and picking it up for £50 so thats not too bad.
I did find my top timeing cover today... and ive run out of black so it's atlas grey, then that ran out so ive had to use the only spray can i could find in the shed for the pullys, ford sunburst red, I sware it's orange
Ant will be getting a call tomorrow to see if my rods and cam are on the way yet.

Well today a box of shiney things arrived from A-Tech
The cam looks, errr like a cam and the adjustable pully looks buisness like with no graduations or fancy spokes like the Kent item on my old nova had... I can see that being fun to set
I also got the main bearing caps out of the paraffin bath (read as tupperware sandwich box) cleaned them off and popped the shells back in, changed the spiggot bearing using Brianmoooore's hydraulic method, works a treat
And came to the milestone, all shells lubed with assembly lube and dropped the crank in, caps on and torqued up and if you put the spanner on the bolt and leave it, it turns no nipping or tight spots.
FINALLY THE BUGGERS GOING TOGETHER!
I hit Ebay again and bought a set of VDO gauges with sender for the oil pressure, Now a pondering, where to fit the oil temp sender? is there enough room between the rack and sump to fit it in the rear of the vertical section where the oil is running down towards the pickup?
Or shal i forget oil temp and fit a wide band lambda and AFR gauge?

Ok the Laptop card RS232 modemthingimebob showed up lastnight and has been installed so finally the bugger talks to the cars LPG system...
I couldn't help my self, I went for a drive with it in the passenger footwell and had a hard time keeping my eyes on the road, all those readings and bits jumping about is fascinating
LET'S VOTE....
HotTuning fannymould, yes or punt it on fleabay and save for a BTB?

keep the hot tuning one dude
Sorry goosie, my mind has been made for me by discovering that after a good clean the slipper pads on the rockers look decidedly 2nd rate... I don't want to put them on a new cam so replacements have been ordered from ECP and the manifold is for sale in the for sale section.
Going to see if sweep has a 325 log manifold hanging about, get it ground flat and save for a BTB

You don't need an E30 to go to Squires, I've never been there in an E30 yet
I've done something i hate today, half a bloody job but i've run out of time before im off out to the squires meet
Picked up the rods on tuesday but I have been a little busy, today i got a couple of hours and set to cleaning bits and ringing the piston's, then attatching the rods and got 3 of the buggers in

All the assembly lube.... The first start will smoke the street out

Blimey,no 'oh that'll do again' on this build!
Much respect...

Youth is wasted on the young.
Well, i looked at the brand fire new camshaft (and the reciept
) then cleaned up the old rockers and saw the small flatspot and fine scoring on the slipper pads and just thought, can i really put those on that and expect it all to last, I want this engine to last a minimum of 5 years
The main bearings have been re used, they still had the manufacturing marks running across them and with the block being from a automatic, even the thrust bearing is vertually un-touched, Big ends are new though, and the rings
We will have to see weather a B28 on a log manifold compares to your B27 with the HT

MORE!!!

As you can see, the timeing lined up perfectly (after turning it over a few times it was absolutly spot on) so i dont know weather this catcams adjustable pully is worth fitting or selling? Is it really a benefit to a build like this on the 272°/272° cam?
I did the tappets while i was at it too, standard is 0.25mm so i set these to 0.30 inlet and 0.33 exhaust due to the higher burn tempeartures of LPG... It says on the cam's data sheet that if i set them to 0.15/0.15 it puts it to 285°/285°

Is it really worth increasing the clearance on the valves on LPG? I've not read anything this anywhere but would be interested in your thoughts. (I'm running LPG)
Ps) I've been following your build, I'd like to do this to mine in the future. Out of interest how much did the crank, rods and bearings set you back?

Rods were £50
Crank £80 + postage
Bearings were supplied by the machine shop, iirc about £50 for the big ends and i re-used the main's.
I really dare not tot it all up, the new con rod bolts were £40 for example.
On the LPG, i have seen Brianmoooore mention it as a good idea and i have guestimated the settings really, after a few hundred miles it will be getting everything re checked and the oil changed so they can be adjusted to standard gaps then, might close the inlet to .25 once the head is on properly with the new gasket and bolt's.... I'm having a go at it tomorrow and might get the inlet and sump on

£300 for the upgrade bits seems dirt cheap and well worth the time and effort! chip too I guess was circa £100. . . Will be interested to see the results

I really wish it was £300
It will be worth getting the bores honed as the pistons will be travelling further down than ever before, then new rings are a good idea... and so it begins... the spending marathon
Chip costs about £80 from ant at A-tec.

I guess it depends what condtion your engine is in to start with. I mean your's should do stellar mileage especially on gas, as so much is new. Why did you have to skim the block I thought the stroke upped the compression? or was that for LPG? going to get an LPG chip or the like?

The increase in stroke will raise the compression but i opted to raise it a bit more.
The stroke increase is 9mm (4.5 each way)
Rods are 5mm shorter.
So the piston is 0.5mm down the bore, i had 0.5mm off the block to return the piston to head clearance to standard, it means a compression of around 9.7:1... with the LPG having an octane of around 107 it will never pink
The future?
Im already weighing up weather the best option will be megasquirt or a miller MAF/WAR chip combo, the WAR chip can have 4 maps (Petrol eco, Petrol performance, LPG and a spare for when i think of something) the lpg should be able to run more ignition advance

I'm interested in the WAR chip and that sounds good for an LPG map
! Noone has used one yet so I'm waiting to see how people get on with it.
I've read the timing can be advanced between 3 and 6 degrees!
I see with the head clearance, I thought the extra stroke was 10mm not 9mm so that makes sense now.

Well i had a couple more hours on it today, changed all the con rod bolts for the brand new ones and torqued them up, New oil pump, sump on with a little dab of instant gasket over the joins... for some reason the gasket had holes punched in it right over these joins so i thought they needed a little something extra there.
Head gasket is in and head torqued down
I just placed the rocker cover on there to keep the dust out.
Next will be assembling the inlet manifold with its BBTB and cleaned B25 injectors

These pics are better than i thought, theyre from my new phone and not the N95 i was using (HTC Touch pro2)

No real progress, picked the exhaust manifold up from a local engineering company. It's just a standard cast one i bought from sweep and it needed a massive 30thou (0.76mm) taken off to get it flat
The guy said 'you would have ripped head studs out before you pulled that thing flat'
I would advise anyone with one of these manifolds off to at least get it checked for flatness...
The Engineer's i used for this were
Stanwood Engineering
Church street
Bawtry
Doncaster
01302 710661
EDIT
I couldn't justify a new post when all I've done is fit the water pump, cam belt and its covers and the skimmed manifold. I might venture into the garage and get the inlet assembled with it's newly cleaned injectors and bbtb in a bit
I think im turning into a tart, painted rocker cover/inlet with polished raised bits AND I've bought a stainless nut/bolt kit for the top end from the group buy section..... Shiney Shiney
I can't wait for the day that i have to choose a RR to get some figures at 1K miles.
Oh and I have fitted the Vernier (very-near) pully after working out where it should be sat then a slight adjustment to account for the 0.5mm missing from the block.... Bloody thing has no graduations on it so I have scratched a base mark into it with a scribe.

Time to dig this up.
I have a 4 day weekend starting thursday so the plan is to have the 2.0 on the floor and donating its good bits by thursday night (ancillerys mainly) and give the engine bay a bit of a spruce up.
Another big box of bits has arrived from Cotswold to keep me entertained, for some reason the head set did not include a gasket for the plate on the manifold where the FPR takes its vac reading from or a TB gasket so assembly of the manifold has been on hold.
Im sure i will have forgotten something but the question is what?
It's going to be fun finding out

More preping on the new engine today, it's finally ready to drop in dispite finding another sheared bolt in the head and finding out that the replacements are NLA, B&Q provided a M6 x 100mm replacement that was trimmed to the required length (for the upper timing cover, exhaust side) All i can say about getting the remains out is it's a sad job when the buggers corroded in.
The engine crane arrived late but it is a serious bit of kit, should pluck the old lump out nicely
Camera batterys are on charge for tomorrows fun and games

Best of luck with it,hope the rain holds off for you
Go at it nice and steady and remember to lift the back of the car up to make removal/insertion easier.(as the actress said to the bishop...)

Well.... The rain didnt hold off and its sat in the bay on bricks/wood at the moment, I was at the F**k it stage when the new 325 LUK clutch refused to sit against the flywheel so the 320 clutch has gone in, plenty of meat left on it and its badged AP so we will see on that one...
That cost me 2 hours mainly because the utter monkey who threw that clutch in before i got the car had rounded the heads out of 2 of the pressure plate bolts and did them up with mole-grips, so i had to ring round trying to find some and then get a lift to a mates garage to have a good rummage through his spare's bucket, turned up a couple of replacements from a Peugeot and put them opposite eachother for ballance.
"Ding Ding, Round 2"... tomorrow

Well i have done more today, engine in, exhaust on, cooling system all plumbed up and ready to be filled so i filled it... and there's a leak, you know the bit that bolts to the back of the head? thats whats leaking
On the bright side i start work at 4:30 am... Hang on a moment
Im waiting for a tb boot anyway so it will be tuesday night before this thing will be running, i cant wait to drive it and get it bedded in but just wish my car didnt know what 'sods law' is.
Piics in a bit when image shed decides to upload them.
