Thinking about buying the girlfriend an E30, she really likes old BMW’s (although she may just be saying that because she knows I like em) problem is she’s only just passed and does like to drive like a bit of a nutter and I’m a little concerned that she’ll spin out and crash as she don’t really understand the concept of rear wheel drive!
If I do get one I think it would be best to get it in the winter time so she realises how easy it is to loose the back end if I buy it in the summer months she may be surprised come winter!

if she has only just passed her test, buying an auto may be a mistake? I drive an auto and it has made me VERY lazy, that plus a friend of mine who recently passed her test said that she has really enjoyed learning how to "properly" drive a manual, trial and error without the stress of being a learner, she stalls, over revs and drives like a maniac but its all part of the joy LOL - does that make sense??
Saying all that, it was my husband who convinced me to buy my E30 and I have never looked back, absolutely LOVE driving it

not for a bird its not, already had a quote on the IS for around £800 TPFT plus i think she would get her mum or dad to insure it and be a named driver which works out even cheaperfuzzy wrote:if shes just passed her test then the insurance for even a 1.6 will be high.

good point fuzzy - my insurance is ridiculous, I am 27 but still deemed too young to have decent insurance rates! I drive a 325i SE on an 89 plate, when I bought the 325i cab on a 92 reg, my current insurance company refused to insure me on it!!

I have 3 points, live in a good area but dont have any no claims due to going on my husbands policy as a named driver for a couple of yearsHMC wrote:Christ where do you people live. My insurance is dirt cheap and I am 26 with lots of points.

My girlfriend occasionally drives mine (usually home from the pub!), and whenever she does its at 5k RPM + everywhere because 'its sounds nice' LOL!
Now she wants me to teach her how to slide it, and was slightly disappointed when i said NO!!!

I pay only £128 a year fully comp, Im 26 with 1 years ncb..Was insured on a 'G reg 325i se' until i sold it last week. Lancashire insurance ets for 17 years..and they good with claims as i experianced it with my previous e30.
When ever my mrs has driven my e30, i can tell she enjoys it, she don't say nothing but i can tell,Mmmm thats why she always getting me drunk when we go out. Get her a 1.6i, tried so many times to spin it, and it just wouldnt happen.

Never realised that it was nessesary to insure one's pedal car... good way to build up the NCD though...sunnyr83 wrote:I pay only £128 a year fully comp, Im 26 with 1 years ncb..Was insured on a 'G reg 325i se' until i sold it last week. Personally I'd hold off until she's had a decent shunt, most people have one before they calm down a bit and an E30 isn't the best thing to crash compared to modern cars. They're OK for their time but once you've popped a door card off and had a look you start to wonder, especially about side impacts.

I'd be scared of getting someone who just passed their test an E30. Although, 316i's aren't exactly power or easy to spin. If the insurance quote is good, try that. Your iS may be a bit too much, but if it means treating yourself a 325i then thats worth it

Uni is killing the project.

My first car was an E30 (and my second). I learned in a diesel 205 but had no issues going straight to an E30: they are easy enough to manouvre and drive in town etc. so I don't see a problem.
I'll give you the alliterative benefit of the doubt on the thread title, but 'Should I get a Beemer for my bird' doesn't exactly suggest that you are an enlightened or modern man...

Quite. My other half drives mine a lot better than I do but I'll happily admit that. Why shouldn't she?

my wifes first car was my tech 1 sport, her second was the Z3 coupe 3.0 in my sig(i wanted the sport!!) if yer bird cannot handle a decent rear wheel drive car then send her to the bus stop.

Dont do it!!! Although she is a much better driver now I have had some experiences that I should have learned from. She wrote off her Z3M then whilst we were waiting to sort the insurance out she used my M3 which now is having all the work done to get it back up to scratch.
Its not worth the arguing or cost! No matter if its a 200 quid car or a 30k Evo.....its an E30 thats needs preserving.
