i have a 1990 316i and i cant get it to run right
on start up it will hardly drive it jumps and backfires under 3000 rpm then clears abit then does it all the time when warmed up i think its over fueling but im running out of ideas what it can be. so far the fuel pumps been replaced the fuel pressure regulator and the afm the ht leads r good i have tryed 2 ecu's any ideas? can the ignition timeing be adjusted? thanks matt

have you checked that the timing belt is alright (ie, not slipped a tooth) or anything?

Have you checked inside the distributor?
It's surprising how bad it can get in there,and still run..

The timing cannot be altered as this is done by the ECU.
If it is out ,it'll probably be what JWaller said.

You could try giving the crank position sensor a wipe and check it's fitted correctly. It's only held in by an allen bolt.

i could kick myself after changing half the bloody engine with no joy iv just notice the rotor arm had a small crack in it chucked a new one on and it runs spot on!! :)
