Really that simple?
What do you think the best colour would be to get the dark grey look of most E30 shelves.

Seen it done on 'Wheeler Dealers'
You could take the shelf and get the paint matched? Halfords?

Might be easiest, will go with pretty much any interior that way.

I used carpet dye and a stiff brush same way you would dye the carpet, spraying it with cans tends to make the shelf fibers go stiff and matted. Done shelf's both ways and prefer the dye route.

I tried the rattle can approach on mine and wasn't at all happy with the result. I took it off to the local auto trimmer and he recovered it in the exact colour I wanted for $40 (about 20 quid) which wasn't much more than the price of the rattle cans!!
It looks first rate, nice and new (sun had got to it a bit).
Alternatively, I reckon you could buy some carpet and some contact adhesive and do it yourself pretty easily. Need the right carpet though (real thin stuff)

I won't be spraying it then.
Trimmers could be an option.
What dye have people used?

i remember years ago my mum used to dye clothes in an old bolier type thing, with fabric dye.
you may still be able to buy this from material/wool shops (Harveys?).
