Wayne...... I sympathise Dude. I've had this problem more than once since I bought my Touring.
What p!sses me off though is that if I had facilities, I could do it myself....... I've been a competent/confident DIYer for over 30 years and I hate letting anyone else loose on my car!!

carb is an easy job...

why not tool over to the local scrappies and get a replacement...if you fit it and the car isn't any better, it isn't the carb!

easy test for Ԛ£25 or so....

and if it works, you're sorted!

should only take 30-45mins to do the swap...

ok i did get another carb but when i fitted it it was worse
the reason for that it think is the broken carb was on the car when it was krypton tuned so the engine was tuned wrong i think

Wayne, I'm really sorry to hear about the problems - I am still seriously mystified - the carb I sold you really was running absolutely sweet all the eight miles home - ru sure its the carb?
Sounds like your well p**sed off with BM's at present, but if you want to persevere, I may be able 2 help. The engine on the car the carb came off was running sweet, and no-one has bought it off me yet. (Full BMWSH up to 2000 miles ago!!)
I need to clear this car off my drive soon, so if you want another go, I'll give you the engine out of mine 4 free, plus any relays etc that make it all work. I just can't believe it's the carb itself, I reckon it is some relay/other component that affects how the carb works.
Surely if you bolt the carb 2 the original engine with all the original 'bits' connected with carbuation, it should run as well as it did 4 me?
Let me know, mate

Before you start swapping engines, what happens if you physically lodge the choke flap open ?
As the weather is fairly mild it would not be used much anyway, so if it is the choke causing the problem you will know for sure if it's wedged open.
If you do it, use something large in case it get's pulled into the engine

When you mentioned the worn spring the mechanic was talking about the only one that is connected to the choke is the idle air corrector needle and if that fails it causes problems when warming up not while pulling away under load.
The spring reacts to the choke, it does not control it, that is done by the choke actuator (electronic)

I seriously think the choke flap actuator that is causing the problem but as you said it moves when the engine is turned on and off i suspect it is the temp sensor that sends the signal to the ECU which in turn controls the choke actuator.(still with me?)

Warm it up and wedge it open, it's got to be easier than changing engines :)
There is NO nucleus.

Martin - sounds like good advice. I will get Wayne whatever he needs to get the b**ger running, so maybe he just needs some engine bits (i'e' temp sensors) to make it all work. As I've said before, the engine in mine ran sweet as a nut, so if anyone can advise exactly what I need to take off to give to Wayne, let me know!
