M50 Engine Wiring Loom problems

Hi,

I'm putting a new engine loom on my M50 engine as the old one was cut by the guy removing the engine.

I finally have a loom, e36 although i was after an e34 loom but beggers cant be choosies.

Anyway, does anyone know of a guide or some info as to where each of the plugs goes onto the engine. I know where everything else should go but i have about 11 plugs to connect to the engine and dont know where to start.

The plugs are numbered so i guess the info is available somewhere.

I've got the bentley manual for the e36 and cant find anything in there.

Any advice would be great.

Can you not match the plugs on the new loom up as you take the old loom off, or wasnt the old loom on the engine?

Na cant do that as ive partly stripped down the engine to replace gaskets and clean the whole thing and the old loom was removed as it was a waste of space. The guy also cut a lot of the hoses so i've had to get replacements. the prob was i took the engine apart ages ago and ive only just got the loom.

This swap is getting frustrating. Anyone thinking of doing a swap, be prepared to dig deep into your pockets, every 5mins there is something else that needs to be bought.

Damn, I thought you might say something like that.

I will have a look round and see if I can find some clear pics of an M50 engine for you, that will hopefully show most of the plugs.

Im guessing the new loom is on the engine now, but you have these 11 plugs you cant figure out where to put them?
Do they fall into place near any obvious sensors etc or have you already got that far?

Can you get any pics of the offending plugs?

Hi James,

Well i now have three looms, one cut, one non-vanos and the vanos loom that i need to fit.

i removed both looms so i know where most of the bits go, just these 11 or so plugs. the plugs all look the same so a pic of the engine prob wont help. i know where they go but not which ones in which holes.
prob is that i need to finish getting the engine back together then i can begin to fit the loom.
I gotta work out where all the water pipes go, i found loads of helpful pics at realoem.com but as for the loom, cant find a simple diagram.

Also, anyone have a e36 m3 manifold or a golf mk1 gti servo for sale??

Sorry mate. I cant find any decent pics of an M50 engine.

If you can post some pics of the bits your having problems with, then maybe we can go from there. Brianmoooore is away at the moment, but Im sure with some pics he will be able to help.

Will the e36 M3 manifold fit an M50?

And for the M50 conversion you can also use a Mk2 Golf 1.3 servo. You dont have to limit yourself to a Mk1 GTi servo.

Okay, so i managed to fit all the water pipes and 99% of the loom plugs on the engine - result!

Anyway, I'm not sure what i need to connect to these two:

Above: screw type connector on bottom right of engine
Below: Two-pin blue connector, on the same cable as the screw connector

Also, whats the connector on the gearbox for?

Are both these on the passenger/inlet side of the engine?

The round screw type connector - Does it have 4 pins and what colour wires go to it? You can pull back the rubber bit and have a look.
Also, is it on a long enough cable to reach the down towards the gearbox? If so, it could be the plug for the Lambda (02) sensor and will reach down and plug on to the sensor in the exhaust.

The other 2 pin rectangle plug - What colour wires go to this plug?
If its on the same cable and long enough, will probably be for the reverse light on the E36. The E30 reverse light is on a different circuit so this plug shouldnt be needed, so can be taped up out the way.

The connector on the gearbox will most likely be for the reverse light switch. It will need connecting to the E30 reverse light plug that runs down by the gearstick.
