Hi Guys,
I have a 320i 1989 and im putting a '94 e34 M50TU in.
Just getting ready to begin my swap and my car is due for an MOT. Wanted to check if it will be better to fix it up for the MOT in its current condition (needs a few little things sorting I recon) or to go ahead with the swap and then get the MOT once the M50 is in?
Once in, the the MOT, does the car need be registered with the 2.5M50 as itÔš's currently a 320i?
Any advice would be appreciated.

I think I'd chuck her in for test first, that way you wont be putting Ԛ£Ã”šÃ‚£ into something unknown.
as for the capacity, you must notify the DVLA of the change , and the revised engine number.
the car will be emissions tested to the date of registration, no need for the Cat anymore then
keep the 02 sensor though , the M50 must have one fitted regardless of any info to the contrary

Is the 02 sensor attached to the engine wiring loom?
Also, does anyone know where i can get a e36 325i downpipe? I've been looking around for ages but havn't had any luck.

02 sensor is down by the gearbox dude, assumin you have a complete donor car to pull this from just follow the wiring loom, you should find the connector either under the coil pack cover or under the intake manifold
For the downpipe its a CAT and downpipe combo, get down the breakers dude, a new one is Ԛ£Ã”šÃ‚£Ãƒ”šÃ‚£
just chop the cat out and replace with small silencer or straight thorough section, keep the 02 mounting boss though

Oh bum, thats a prob then. i stripped a e36 a couple of weeks ago but the guy wanted to keep the exhaust. I was planning to cut the exhaust where it goes into one just before the CAT.
I've been to all the local breakers and no one has any e36's available. ebay it is then.
Whats the deal with getting the original e36 325i downpipe to fit, someone mentioned that RHD vehicles have a prob as the steering column is in the way?
Also, do i put the exhaust manifolds on before or after the engine is in?

manifolds on with engine is is a PITA dude !
fit them and crane her in , best option IMHO
with regard to the steering, the e36 rack into e30 is an excellent upgrade, perhaps that would get around any clearance issues M8 ?
what are you planning to do to clear the brake servo ? its V close to the intake mainfold , others have used a porker 944 servo to achieve the req space
have you tried the partsearch link in the for sale forums ? has turned up some good results in the past, worth a shot anyway

I've got a e36 rack to fit so thats cool.
So to confirm i'm fitting the manifolds before i fit the engine.
Was going to use a mk1 Golf GTI servo, read a thread last night that said it was a straight swap? I had a e21 booster but it turned out to be the wrong one so thats in the quickly increasing metal junk pile.
I tried the part search thing, didnt have a lot of luck, the prices on scrap parts are so varied.
I've got the loom on the way (one with engine was cut) and then i've got a few more bits to get then its time to start the swap.
Swapping the insides of a e36 LSD into a e30 open diff today, a joker the first time but easy next time.
This swap is definalty a full time job.

Since i'll have to get hold of one, can i use one from any other BMW or does it have to be from a e36 325i?
I was looking on that realoem.com site and couldn't find the same part number on other BMWs?
Also, I'm a little confused about where i plug the sensor into? I read in the bently manual for the e36 (page ELE-77) that there are 4 connections...
1,oxygen sensor relay,
2,gnd,
3 DME 02 signal,
4 DME 02 sig gnd.
If the sensor doesnt connect to the engine wiring loom then where would it go? Or does it and its a seperate cable? I wish i had put more effort into removing it from the e36 i stripped.

The connections for the Lambda (02) sensor are all in one round plug, with 4 pins, and should be on a lead long enough to reach back towards the gearbox. This just plugs on to the sensor.
The Bosch part number for the E36 325i is 0258003219 and can be found here http://www.lambdasensor.com/main/bmw.htm
Just take the Bosch part number to your local motor factors/auto electrical place and they should be able to supply you with a universal sensor. Check the price at BMW first though, cause it may not be much difference.
I got mine from Hickley Valtone. Cost Ԛ£45 each (I have 2 on my S50) instead of Ԛ£100+ each from BMW
