Hi Cotswold guys.

I have noticed over the last couple of years that certain parts that were NLA have become available again.

Is there any particular reason for this?

Also, someone once told me that they were told by their local BMW dealer parts department that if 10 orders were made for a part that had gone NLA, the part would be made available again after another batch was made but when that batch had sold, the part would go NLA again.

Is there any truth in this?

I ask these questions because there are certain parts that i would like that have gone NLA (Original BMW RHD floor mats for example) and i'm sure there are plenty of other zoners who have similar needs and if there is the possibilty of current NLA parts becoming available again through a bulk order then maybe group buys could be done on these?

This would obviously be benificial to zoners and yourselves.

Thanks, Barry.

Hi There

I have had an answer from BMW but he has forwarded to parts supply in Germany, his email to me reads

Hi Brett

I will forward to our supply dept. I think however it does depend on the part - How much it can be re-manufactured for and in what quantities the suppier would be insistent on having placed. There is no hard and fast rule. Mats I know have to be produced in very large quantities to become cost effective Regards James

as soon as i get email from supply dept i will post again

Thanks

Brett

I've also heard that BMW log enquiries on parts and even if they get just enough enquiries they will order parts.

I assume for the OEM supplier, they have all the moulds and tools kept etc so it's just a case of pouring some plastic / rubber, stamping some alloy etc and ship out.

A lot of parts are still used in the E46 even I think so they are guaranteed to be available for quite a while - trim is the first thing to go NLA. I also know that EU law states that a manufacturer has to ensure comprehensive parts supply for at least 25 years or so and then they can cease production - how old is the E30 now!

@ Barry - You can get the OEM Mats from eBay in ant colour but minus the BMW roundels - they are from the OEM supplier - I have some Deep Blue ones in my 318iS and they are identical to my old ones. The clips are slightly different but the material and piping is identical and the fit is flawless - still pricey at around £50ish but you know I'm fussy and they are the same mat.

A-Tech Ant said it was about 20-25 years.

The mats - there are some sellers on there selling sets for £15 - these are shite. You want these:
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/BMW-CARPET-MAT-SE ... 1315wt_923

They are are £45 odd - buy any colour but tell them what colour you want. They only have colours that came in the E30 as they are the same manufacturer. That seller also sells OEM mats for any BMW since.

MotorMec also have them as well as loads of other Genuine/OEM E30 parts.

No dude.

OEM means the company that makes the parts for BMW originally.

BMW stamp them, put them in their own box and sell them to us as 'Genuine' at a premium.

This does not mean the OEM maker cannot sell us exactly the same thing under
their own brand (Bosch, Hella, Mahle, Boge, Lemfoerder etc). Some people say they are tested
to a higher standard and are the best quality and others say that OEM is the exact same thing.
Always buy Genuine first and then OEM - never buy anything else.

So these mats are made for BMW but are also sold by themselves direct to us.

BMW (car makers in general) don't really make anything other than major engine parts and body
panels / chassis. They are more 'assemblers' and they get hundreds of the above specialist companies
to make stuff to their design / spec.

a few years back toyota gb donated thousands of pounds worth of parts to the owners club free so they could sell them cheaply to the members to keep the cars on the road.otherwise theyed go in the skip as not many would go to a dealer for parts for they old cars.
i wonder whats the chances of bmw ever doing something similar?

Not true.

I bought my E46 Touring from a BMW parts guy and he said if I ever needed parts I should email him as he now and again is called to some weird parts dismantle fest - he basically said there was lots of stuff that was either tossed or sold for silly money. I don;t know for what models and for how far back but I couldn't be arsed with the timing.

I've also bought a sunroof tray and a new roofskin and then told the dealer that the roofskin has a sunroof tray in it already - they refunded me for the extra sunroof tray and asked me to 'dispose of the extra tray for them'

Morning All

Here is an update email from BMW UK, for your info Mobile Tradition is the department in Germany (AG) that deal with all older models

Unfortunately we have yet to receive a response from our colleague in Mobile Tradition. Clearly a response from AG would have provided more clarifying information. However, in order to avoid a further delay in responding to your dealer question, we can offer a little information which may be of assistance.

To re-iterate your own comments, there is no hard and fast rule regarding the NLA indicator. Ultimately it is the prerogative of AG and our systems simply reflect the information available to us.

Each part number would be reviewed on its individual merit. This would tend to be handled by the Mobile Tradition department in AG (alongside their parts procurement team).

There are a number of factors which would be considered by AG. As you
are aware, even for parts which are theoretically 'available' the lead time can be very lengthy. Often AG will need to source new suppliers; MOQ's are often imposed and ultimately the procurement process must be cost effective whilst at the same time ensuring that the parts produced meet the required standard of BMW quality.

If there are part numbers which are specifically required (with order quantities), we can certainly enquire with AG on the dealer's behalf.

Hope this is useful information, as i have said before as soon as i get the email from Germany about this i will post again

Thanks

Brett

My bodyman adapted 2 door saloon one's for my cabbie, the only difference is at the forward end,by the cill.
When I started my cabbie project, neon green fabric was listed as 'available' for backrest only.On my first enquiry with the helpful lads at Cotswold they were unable to supply, and they 'phoned Germany to double check for me.With a further order for other bits to Cotswold I enquired again about seat covers, and this time backrest covers were shown as available,so I ordered two.So in the case of some bits at least that are listed as NLA it does pay to ask again!
