If you like the Nissan SR20DET then give some thought to the Toyota 3SGTE as well. Transverse mount in FWD Celica, but easily converted to straight mount for RWD application. Turbo also on passenger side.

Toyota 3SGTE RWD Bellhousings are not easy to come by therefore can be expensive to convert to manual rwd in the UK, completely agree 3SGTE is the engine of choice over SR20DET and CA18DET when aiming for bigger figures.

Why are they the engine of choice and which ball housings can be used?ShakeyC wrote:Toyota 3SGTE RWD Bellhousings are not easy to come by therefore can be expensive to convert to manual rwd in the UK, completely agree 3SGTE is the engine of choice over SR20DET and CA18DET when aiming for bigger figures.

3SGTE is more reliable compared to the others from my experience in standard form upto around 400bhp, then beyond that 3SGTE has way better scope for higher power than SR20DET and CA18DET mostly because Toyota head is a much better design than Nissan (CA18DET head is better out of the Nissan two)
Bellhousing/Gearbox from a manual Toyota Supras to Lexus IS200 (W55 57 or 58 model numbers if i remember rightly) Problem is here in UK are autos therefore harder to source and sensible money but they are very strong and reliable.

Yip. Used a W55 manual gearbox on mine, but with a bellhousing from a Hilux pickup with the 4Y/3Y/2Y engine. In FWD form the 3SGTE has the starter motor located on the exhaust side of the engine, but mounted on the gearbox side of the flywheel. The bell housing usually found with Hilux 2C diesel engine is a good fit between the 3SGTE and the W55/57/58 box, but has the starter motor on the turbo side of the flywheel. A recipe for disaster. The 4Y bellhousing requires a bit more work than the 2C, but you end up with the starter motor on the inlet side of the engine where it is cooler and there is a lot more room to fit it.
BTW & FYI:
The "G" in 3SGTE refers to the cylinder head with a pentagonal combustion chamber roof, as designed by Yamaha for Toyota (believe it or not). And the "T", as you might expect, designates that it is turbocharged. The 3SFE, as found in the Toyota Camry, is therefore a similar engine (similar block), but with a narrower cylinder head and no turbocharger. The capabilites of the 3SGTE engine all depend upon whether it is of the ST185, ST195, or ST205 variety.
