As above really, for an M20! I just want a bit of fantasising! Go look at them, look at the price, think "F@ck cant afford that!", then go off and look at loans and in general fantasise some more!

For an M20, about 30bhp i believe. But its more to do with how it makes your car drive and sound. £1500 for the ITBs then you'll NEED a remap or megasquirt etc... fitting? How handy are you with a spanner? Or a tens of thousands of pennies to you local mechanic! ;)

nope, there is no real benefit of carbs over throttlebodies other than being retro and slightly cheaper. there are major disadvantages though.

throttlebodies every day of the week :D

tbh, that is setup isnt that expensive, youll pay the best part of a grand just for the carbon airbox for an m3, so a manifold, throttlebody and airbox setup for £1500 is reasonable.

or, if you're feeling brave, make your own set :mad:

I would want 6 separate thottlebodies (obviously...) but all with separate air intakes... :drool:


I would need basically a walkthrough to make my own set!

The youtube video of someone with a dirty six and open ITBs sounds raw and beautiful!

If you were looking at splurging that sort of outlay on induction I'd forget N/A tuning and start getting the goodies together for forced induction.

By the time you've finished buying stuff like that Dbilas setup, ECU etc and I would assume a BTB exhaust etc you'll have spent what, about 3 bags?

That would surely have you well on the road to a decent turbo setup?

When eventually i get round to building a serious M20, dbilas bodies will be the induction of choice.

Carbs are a backward step IMO and theres no way i would molest a sport with FI.

My plans for M20 are,

Alpina/TD crank (Allready have unfitted)
Windage tray
H section billet rods
Custom forged pistons 11.1 CR
Lightened flywheel (All ready have unfitted)
Alpina spec head
Billet rockers
Cam (undecided)
BTB2 (All ready have and fitted)
dbilas ITB's
Uni Q

sounds like a nice setup, what sort of power would that be pushing with all them mods. 200+???

Using google currency converter for the dollars to pounds, the above works out to be £4509 so add import tax to the stuff in dollars it gonna be the best part of £5k. Add another £1k for the other parts that make up the internals of an engine will take it over the £6k mark.

On the plus side the internals should be good for 8k rpm and dependant on cam, over 250bhp.

Someones got to do it! :)

There's modifications and modifications - the set-up bss325i's talking about is really the ultimate. I don't think anyone could claim his car devalued with that engine in it - especially if the low miles lump it replaces is retained with the car. Not that he's gonna sell it anyway I guess! EDIT - as you've just shown in the post above!

Sounds great.

I only mentioned carbs to be a bit mischievous - only a masochist would fit them to a road M20, but they make sense on a race engine if budget won't stretch to itbs. Frankly my idea of an ideal M20, such as it is, would be quite a soft tune 2.7/8, probably retaining the inlet manifold - I like the idea of ending up with a 'standard feeling' engine, just with more go.

Have to say, the thing that irks me the most about e30s is the arm-twirly rack - however good the btb2 is, and I know they are bloody good, I'd have a z3 rack instead while they remain either/or.

Doesn't look like it's going to happen by the look of things - the possibility is always there in the future though.

Not that it matters to me - I've got to pay for road tax and servicing and insurance and and and and ad nauseam before I ever get to buying such tasty morsels! Probably 10 years before the broonie gets the power she deserves - hopefully she won't have roted away by then.

N/A Tuning all the way! I'd consider a turbo one day, but I have no idea about how they work, what you need to fit them, or how to fit them and so on.

Turbo's are fun, granted, but my car (being a jersey-boy car!) will be optimised for as much low/mid grunt as I can and powerful turbos kind of ruin that, when the boost only kicks in some fair way above the speed limit :P

I'd put a turbo into a track car anyday though, or a supercharger!

I'm awaiting on the BTB3 as I need one of those to get round my Z3 rack I picked up yesterday! Hopefully it'll go through, but we need a volunteer!

These Dbilas ITBs are really starting to get to me and one day will be an inclusion.

Barry, that is some plan you have there! Mines not quite like that, but maybe one day it might get there...

For now just the usual Camshaft, BBTB, ECU, Lightened Fly, Some form of intake and a BTB(3). Then make sure the money is well spent on the suspension, bushes, brakes etc, then down into a refurb for the rest of the car.... dreading the bank balance at then end of all this!!! :(

Now I have a bloody £1500 intake system linguring in my mind! Let alone the other bits and bobs! :evil:

N/A without a shadow of a doubt.

I've been in a M20b27 turbo and although it was a bad one, it felt absolutely awful.
Power delivery was shite and all the pops, wooshes and bangs just didn't feel right in an E30 :(

If I had a nice Sport, my mods would be...
M20b28 using the M52 crank and get some H-beam rods in a m20b20 size.
Then some uprated pistons to give the high CR
nicely worked head and cams (not sure if I'd get tame or silly ones)
lightwieght flywheel,
BTB3 as I couldn't live with an E30 and a standard rack anymore or else get a custom geared E30 rack if all else failed

And all the other little bits that go with building a nice engine.


As for the ITBs, I'm not too sure... They would make a great difference but I like the idea of having a Sport that looks standard on the outside yet goes like it should, A bbtb and M30 afm might do fine maybe.

Friend of mine is putting Dbilas ITBs on his M42 at the moment. Will be interesting how they turn out.

I personally think the plenum is flawed in getting air to cyl.1 but as a bolt on package it's a brilliant piece of kit.

I'll be going S54 ITBs if I can get my hands on a set otherwise I'll use the S50 ones :)
Might swap the S50 tbs with my friends S54 E30 build some day when he's not looking :P

Your sport build idea is basically the same as mine, just I wont be stroking her! (hehe, that works two ways :D)

Muscley and torquey (also fairly rapid) with a heavy quickshift gear change. Thats what an M20 needs to be like. :P
