Ey up, this is my first post on here, so hi to everyone.

Im considering buying a Touring in the not-too-distant future to use as daily transport, but the real reason im after a wagon is for towing for my track car, as the extra luggage space would be useful for tools, spares and whatnot.

My question is thus though - has anyone fitted one of the modern 3-litre turbo diesel engines into an E30 before? It would make an awesome mile-muncher, and the massive torque coupled with great economy would make a good tow car a brilliant one.

Are there any obvious problems that spring to mind? Im completely new to BMWs - i've always been a bit of a (classic)Ford head, and more recently into VWs so have very little knowledge about the E30.
The obvious thing that springs to mind would be the security stuff thats built into new cars - coded keys, ecus, clocks etc.
Would i be best served starting with a 325? Or just the best example i could find (in terms of bodywork) regardless of trim level, as all the driveline is being replaced anyway?
Would the E30 rear end be 'man enough' to take the torque of the Diesel? I think i read the engine produces something like 320lbs/ft?

At the moment this is still a bit pie in the sky, but the more i think about it the more it makes good sense to me.
Obviously its not going to be straightforward, but thats half the fun isnt it?

And while i realise it would make much more sense to buy a big 3.0TDi wagon as BMW produced it, i'm a bit of a retro/old skool freak, and like my cars to have character and individuality.

Any info, or links to build threads or features would be massively appreciated. :D

Thanks, Rich.

all I can say is......buy a 5 series. Towing another car with an E30?? Must be a very light car/trailer then. Don't think it matters what engine you fit, the maximum towing weight will not be big enough with the E30.
with the 5 series you will also have ROOM in the back, don't think the luggage capacity would be sufficient for me. Just throw a few rims with tyres in the E30.
I bought a E39 for towing my M3 and even that is sometimes not big enough for all the stuff I take with me.

The car i'd be towing is a Vauxhall Chevette, which weighs about 750kg, using a towing dolly, not a full-on car trailer, so the total weight would be just over a tonne.

Im not really keen on the 5-series, the 3 is the only BMW that has any sort of attraction for me.

Thanks for the advice, may have to completely rethink my ideas then....

I thought about towing dollys as well but (not quite sure if this is true) was told that the Limited Slip diff will wear out on the towed car.

Keep in mind you need the correct license to tow heavy stuff.
Just B might no be sufficent.

I also like the idea of a 330D lump under the bonnet of an E30 but I think it would be just too complicated to fit... Wiring would be a nightmare!

Been discussed before, you'll have to drive to the moon and back to pay off the conversion costs. LPG is the way forward 40-45% reduction in fuel bills. My conversion cost £750 DIY which will take 10K miles to pay off. Your looking around £1250-1500 for someone to fit a simple system and £2K for a multipoint. Cheers Alex

Can anyone suggest how to test if the boot lights are staying on with the boot shut?
