Can't help you with wiring mate but there is a 540 auto in a breakers across here, might be easier to get it running and tested while its still all in the car?

Red and green to battery +, brown or brown/orange to battery - is all you need, assuming no EWS of any kind. You'll have to feed power to the fuel pump as well of course, and 'hot wire' the starter motor.

you'll first need a fuel pump, which connects through the x20 plug (like the c101 on e30's) pin 13, green-violet wire.
EDIT:
Or like suggested by brian, run a separate supply to the pump

The starter, always on the x20, is pin 18, a black yellow wire. Put 12V there to start it.
Ignition is pin 21, green wire. Needs you to put 12V onto it for the engine to run.

Oil pressure light, of you want to be safe and connect some sort of bulb, is pin 23, brown green wire. (obviously earthed on the other side of the bulb)

If the engine is a '95 one, chances are you have EWS II, in which case there are a few more things to connect as well.
Other than that, the two big power wires are close to the ECU box, as they connect there from the battery in the boot, and there is an earth somewhere from the block, but I can't remember where. IIRC, the cable was black and of a relatively big guage, as you'd expect.

All systems go then! Note that the red and brown or brown/orange may have a black outer sheath on them.

woops, sorry... You're right, as always.

I'm a bit knackered tonight. Had to get 24 280/570R13 & 230/520R13 race slicks off rims and fit new ones on before brands hatch next weekend... And they're not nice to fit at all!
