Hi,

Not sure that this is the right area but can anybody give me a rough idea of how much a full respray should cost?

I've had one quote of round about Ԛ£1500 (including some minor metalwork repairs/welding to arches etc.) but i've got nothing to compare it against - the colour is astral silver.

Thanks

I assume they are not doing the engine bay, door shuts, inside boot etc,

I would have thouht 1500 was about right....

Astral silver? never heard of it!

Car is a South African import - i guess it will be a standard euro colour with a different name (i hope!!!).

Seems a fair price. I was quoted Ԛ£1200 for mine, but that was just a respray, no repairs.

Who was the quote from? I know a few places in the Taunton area.

I got it from mike chedzoy in greenbrook terrace - just round the corner from me - i just asked him if he could get me a rough quote (he runs a garage and farms out the bodywork) as he's done some good service work for me in the past.

I posted a thread last week about any recommended bodyshops in Taunton but nobody answered

Sounds like I need to take a trip to Portsmouth!

My quote was for removing the kit, doors, windows etc and included stripping and spraying the engine bay, cause there wasnt an engine in it at the time.
I also got a quote from Holley Autobodies in Taunton. Ԛ£1750 but their work is top stuff.

the problem with a blow over is that a year late it will start to flake and peel as the damp gets under the paint where they have masked the car up is it worth spending Ԛ£1500 per year to freshen up? my way is do it properly or dont do it at all. get your self some quotes and if u want i'll put u on to my bloke if u dont mind traveling. think bout it less cash, better job, will only need doin the once no matter how long u own it

That makes sense - I want to keep it as it's got less than 60K on the clock and other than the bodywork it's in almost perfect nick (except for hoses, bushes and probably brake pipes).

Best go and get some better quotes then, and if they're outrageous i'll be in contact.[/quote]

Damn you got a bare metal respray for a grand?! Did you do all the stripping yourself? That's a seriously good price, Ԛ£1000 is about right for a full repsray the same colour, colour change with overspray is about Ԛ£1300 I think I was told. Depends who you get to do it though, there is another guy who charges about Ԛ£3500 but he is one of the best car restorers in the UK.

not a 'normal' BMW sticker... must be different as it's a SA car. I guess it was made under licence down there.

The normal BMW colour label has the paint code on it... you will need to get your bodyshop to investigate the sourcing of this paint.

Cheers for that Daz - only prob is it doesn't clear up the origin of the paint - the touch up kit in the car appears to be pukka bmw but originates from a paint factor in pretoria??????

Also-

I only have an 8 number vin code, stamped on the top of the front left strut mount.

I have a horrible feeling that this is bad!!

Is that where it normally is

Mate, if your around sometime over the next day or 2, I can come and have a look if you like.

I dont know much about SA imports, but I should be able to tell you if somethings up. Im sure its fine and just some differences with it being an import, but the offer is there if you want.

Hmmmmmm!

Vin says 2 door,

Body is 4 door,

History from import (1991) is pukka and 4 door

Confused!
