Insure it at the Windsor relatives address and keep it there (it might be in your possession a little longer if your area is as rough as you say).
Make it a basic 316 - no fancy wheels / kit / paint etc.
Buy a cheap bike or moped for the commute to the car.
Don't give up so easily.
Talk to insurance companies rather than doing the online quote thing - I've always got better deals that way.
Get a Cat 1 or 2 alarm on the car, and ideally park it off road.

I got 127mph out of my 1995 1.6L fiesta ghia! lol. 6k rpm in 5th gear, ragged it completely. Never did that again
topped 110/115mph any time after that.
Alex - Your mate WILL NOT be insured on the impreza. You have to be 21, insured fully comprehensive on an "adults" insurance, and drive a car that is insured FC on adults insurace. Young driver policies cannot have that benefit. I've been looking into my insurance and even though I'm 21, I dont actually have a proper policy on my E30. Still considered as a young driver and can have that policy untill i'm 25.
I looked at insuring an E36 M3 Evo 3.2L 321bhp
. They gave me a quote of £1.1k
, but said your young drivers policy wont cover that so would need to go to adults insurance, pay mad excesses and loose other benefits, but gain benefits too! Such as the ability to drive anything up to (but not including) group 25 insurance
So basically everything bar supercars. Also would give me more freedom in modifications, such as the classic word "turbo".
ProperOldSkool - Try avoid a rusty cabby, try avoid a cabby for insurance. Look at moredoor cars, they always tone down the insurance. Personnally, i'd consider keeping it at your relatives house and busing/walking or whatever to take it out. Just drop it back there every few days (or just keep it at yours and if it does get nicked or whatever, try not to claim...)

ProperOldSkool , Im not going to advise you to go on admiral, Adrian Flux..........what may be cheap for one may be expensive for another. Lancaster are great with me, but may quote you dearly.
The best thing you could do is try insurance search engines. Go on moneysavingexpert.com, they have an insurance page which advise you on how to get the cheapest quotes, theres no harm in reading through that.
Just dont give up

I think you're gonna be best off trying to get a policy in your own name on something with a tiny engine - 3rd party only, and build up on years NCB. Then try and insure you're E30.
I got a 1.3 fiesta at 19 which cost £1400, then a year later insured a 2.8i granada for £800 3rd part fire and theft...
see if the place you're studying at has any deals - mine used to have a deal with endsleigh...

Insurance is such a killer for young drivers
2.5k for my 320 cabby
It get's better the longer you have been passed and NCB is a bonus too. You want to insure the least powerful car you can buy, only way IMO.
I've been passed 1 year and a half and it's £900 to insure a 325i now
. Was over 3k when i first got quoted
