Hi guys

after a recent trackday I noticed that around left handers the steering universal joint was catching on the exhaust manifold (even once or twice in the wet, all the time in the dry).

does any one here run solid bushes or have any recommendations on some that are less felxible?

Cheers

Chris

May not be related, but I needed to swap the rack in my M50'ed touring the other week, then found that the coupling was just rubbing on the manifold.I placed a single washer under the engine mount...
I am using E34 mounts from GSF....
A coupling without the damper would give me ample clearance!

Is it possible for the linkage to get stuck and lock the steering in any way shape or form, is it litterally a bit of vibration i can hear from the two contacting each other, as I still don't fancy the engine moving far enough over to make contact.

Backing off the throttle should allow the engine to move away from the linkage, so its not really as bad as it seems

yeah, but where's the fun in that, plus its not ideal backing off mid corner on the track, especially in the wet 8O

:D

Ive never driven or tried to move an engine on the M5 mounts, but the 635csi things I use are plenty strong enough, one is starting to separate from the amount of heat it had round it in my old 4 door but they are still very stiff

Less room on an S50 Dan.. The head is wider.. I coudn't physically move my engine on it's old mounts, but it used to lock the steering up..

It doesn't catch on the joint, it catches on the lower UJ itself!

thats what i needed to hear (or not hear as the case would seem)

my mind has already been bubbling over about modified steering couloums etc to get around it but would have to get under the car to see better, which I ain't doing now.

watch this space though winkeye

If you are going to do a modded coupling, you will need a thinner UJ OR to move it's position

I've been under loads..

The AKG mounts actually sit the engine slightly lower

nah, change the angle at which the UJ approaches the rack, hopefully moving it further away from the fannymould

this of course depends on what i can do to the rest of the coloumn further back in the car, it might also mean I can fine tune the exact position of the steering wheel inside the car :D

lie i said, it needs more than just thinking about it, I need to look at the entire inside/underside of everywhere first, it might not even be possible yet.

the only thing you are stuck with is the position of the rack splines.. which mean UJ will always be in roughly the same place

 Dan.. You mean gently stroke and ask them nicely to find a way to clear..?!

To be fair.. For the money paid for them, you'd think btb could have made them clear.......
