Cheers lads, there is a huge diversity on the go, but I definately think there is a trend your all not spotting.

Most people here are more hands on jobs. Mechanics, Chefs, Lab dummies, Funiture Makers and Male escorts!

Theres seems to be a good lack of office lackies and supposedly "cushy" jobs, etc.

The only proper office people here are developers so far by the seems like me and konfuzion. But we do jobs that are like computer related challenges. Keep the mind active!

@madaboutthe3 - Good luck in the industry. You'll find that you'll be off to work in the consultancy world and know next to nothing! But thats a good thing as our jobs are consistently learning. For a good, well-spoken young lad entering the Business world (for example, software development, such as myself or Ian (konfuzion)) is to either get as much experience as possible. Offer to work for free if you can't get a job. Accept any job that will train you in that field. Training, training, training... learning, learning, learning! Most important thing by far in an interview is show a serious interest, ask them what they do, their technologies blah blah... AND express a strong willingness to learn and improve. Dont be a know-it-all as very few senior developers will claim they actually know a lot. They'll be specialised in a few places most.

The consultancy side of things should offer you some nice money, and quite often a relaxed environment, or a stressy one, but can swing either way. Massive sense of achievement when you finally deploy software for offshore banks or government software and get good feedback!
Anyway, PM me if you want some advice on interviews etc. I'm sure even Konfuzion will give you an insight into being a fully fledged senior developer...

I'm looking forward to working within different branches of my company around the globe! Guernsey , Isle of man winkeye (you all know what that means!), Cayman Islands and Barmuda! Offshore tax haven trip around the globe.

Anyways. Looks like we all lead very different lives! 'Variety is the spice of life' they say!
Keep it up as this is getting interesting :D

Well I'm going to return to Uni in the new term to start a years course in IT. I was doing systems administration for a hospital for 5 years. Also in the middel of sueing same employers for wrecking my back.

Other than the zone I play World of Warcraft with a few mates of mine and to keep an eye on my nefue who adores the game. I'm also involed with saving the Avero Vulcan and also been helping with raising money for Concorde at the airbus factory in Bristol ( before my back injury in early 2007 ).

Please dont play WoW... I'm a huge gamer, love all sorts of games and MMO's are appealing to me. Not saying WoW is a rubbish game, I've played it for a few months, but it eats away at your life! I've had that experience with Counter-Strike and Source and its not good. I'm now just playing a game with a difinitive ending to ensure that there is a good sense of satisfication for playing the game, and completing it! To many of my mates have got lost somewhere in StormWind castle and their phones dont get answered....

Anyway, i'll get back on topic :D :o:

Student for :
Aerospace and space-rocket engineering in university :D :D :D :D

Starting my own business though hopefully in 3 months I will be up and running.
If it all goes according to my plans, then I could potentially NEVER EVER have to work for the rest of my life and have 100 E30 M3s.

But right now, I'm a lazy C*UNT who can't even get out of bed at 2PM for a piss.

importing and selling motorbikes and scooters

www.PSUK.BTtradespace.com

Due the seasonal nature of selling motorbikes i also work 8hrs a day 5 days a week as part of the security team at the National Space Centre

By the way if any one happens to be a web designer and want to make me a better website than the piss poor example above drop me a PM!

Which company? I worked for Bowman Power for a while heading up there electrical packaging dept, our primary business was gas turbine CHP's. Left there and re-trained as an electrician, have now run my own business for the last 6 years. Apart from the sparky work I also fit kitchens / bathrooms etc.

Started my working career as a mechanical designer in mainly defence & communication systems, best part time job i have had was working in a hospital, clearing up the burns & operating theatres. Don't know why i enjoyed that job so much, might of been all the young ladies :D :D :D :D

Until July 30th i'm a Technical Editor, I write the ICME repair time and service schedule data for cars and vans, my job has been outsorced to India and I will then be un employed. In a former life I was an HGV mechanic and later went on to work on cars, I am now sick to the back teeth of working in the motor industry and would advise anyone who is thinking of getting in to it to think again, it's sh1t.

I work full time for a plastic fabrication company, Managing the Laser department and drawing in many packages including AutoCad.

I spend a lot of time with my wife and two kids who always come first.

I never really get away from the Zone I'm always upgrading, fixing, writing code, the zone is like having a third child lol !

If I'm really lucky I might get a chance to work on the car ! but not very often, maybe that's why it's been off the road for 6 years

:D

I agree with you, but then again, we work in the industry. Quite often a web page is just there to help smaller companies give out some of their information for already interested clients.

Maybe just a graphic touch up and sort the layouts and designs to a more modern standard, but they aren't too bad... apart from pac1982 who would benefit a bit from his own site, pulled away from that god damn aweful looking BT Traders site... Well there you go pac! 3 Web Developers linguring around....

up until september last year i was working as a stock controller/wharehouse man/flt (counter balance & high reach) driver/order picker/dogs body for possibly one of the biggest haulage firms in the uk & eu till i fecked up my shoulder & now like felix i'm suing them for the damage it's done & also suing them for sacking me for having time off for a problem they caused.

looking at going back to college in the new term to finish off a mechanical engineering corse (spelling?) i started when i was 17 & i really hope i can get back into doing it.

so all in all i'm a goverment artist at the moment.

I am a HGV class 1 driver for a frozen/chilled food distributor.I work evenings/nights,one week I trunk to Farnbough(hi Simon13!)the other I go to Aylesford.Very boring work, all I do is point the thing at a motorway and engage cruise control....
I keep a sailing cruiser at Hickling Broad in Norfolk, well,I am trying to...the pub I moor at has had a change of tenant and the new guy wants all 50 odd privately owned boats off 'his' land!
This thread just demonstrates the diversity of the zone, our common interest is E30's and their preservation and continued use.
