Pink pink when braking

Hi folks, first time writer long time reader. After a 200mile drive I re-entered the city and had to apply light braking for lights/roundabouts etc. I hadn't had to use the brakes heavily all day. on doing so. I heard a quiet "pink pink" noise like a spring and felt a slight movement on the pedal. The noise sounded like it came from the front left wheel area.

It's a '94 3.18 touring with 144K miles. The brakes were serviced (new pads allround, brake fluid flush and new slave cylinder fitted) 4000miles ago. The car hasn't driven much in the last 2 years until I bought it. now it is being driven frequently.

Any ideas??

Probably the back plate touching a bit of crusty rust on the outer edge of the disc.

Cheers for that suggestion Brianmoooore, i took the wheel off and had a look, its not the back plate, which is rusty but not touching the disc. I also notice a "fffff fffff" sound from the passenger footwell when tapping the brakes?

If you mean it sounds like an air leak/emision then its quite normal so Im told.

also worth checking the anti rattle springs are located correctly, my latest buy had this as the pads were put in wrongly, easy to fix by removeing the pads and putting them back correclty!!

Good lads, good, thanks for the suggestions, you know your stuff. I will get that effing wheel off and have another butchers at those anti rattle springs.


Also on another note my door makes a really loud "KIK KIK" when opening, this ones really just for kman82 as he like sound effects. It really takes puts me down when I open the door and it sonds like a shitbox. The guide has broken off it's weld on the insife of the wing panel, its a real coont to get at aswell, it's like trying to undo a bra though a letterbox. I'm tring to think around the problem but wonder if you have any ideas???

Another common fault. The door brake frame has broken.
It can be welded at a push, but there's plenty of perfect second hand ones around. Easily changed by taking the door card off and undoing the two 6mm bolts you can see from the outside.
I'm fairly sure that LH and RH ones are identical.

thanks again Brianmoooore, it is the car part of the guide that is loose, you know the bit that holds the pin with the c-clip that is attached through the car body panels. The door side of the equation seems fine. I took the whole door off on Saturday for access to the area, but just had to put it back on with the sound remaining.

I like you profile pic by the way, are all the touring yours? I think they look better than the saloons, which is rare for a car shape.

If the bracket on the body shell breaks away, it's usually as a result of a broken brake in the door.
I came across this on the driver's door of an E30 I bought several years ago. I welded the bracket back into place rather crudely, without much preparation, but it was all still good when I put that particular into storage late last year.
If you weld the bracket, be aware that a sunroof plastic drain tube (if you have a sunroof), runs down just inside the pillar. Forcing it up at the bottom should lift it up and push it out of the way, as long as you don't get things too hot.
The tourings in the sig. are just a small sample! There's around ten more the other side of the buildings, and you are quite right, tourings look far better than the saloons, have better aerodynamics, superior build quality and rust resistance, and even the lowliest 316 has suspension and brakes to match a 325 saloon.

Hi Brian,

thanks again for the input, I'm going to try and put some kind of botched small bracket, maybe even some coils of wire around the back of the hinge pin to trap it's movement. I'll let you know if it works.

Back to the brakes though, I was wondering if it might be an ABS problem as it only becomes apparent at low low speeds like just before a stop. There is a hmmmmm followed by the dink dink.

Hopefully the problem wont develop too quickly as I'm doing a 500mile round trip back home to the Highlands this weekend; proper touring for the old girl.
