I was wondering what was generally the accepted method of tuning these engines, the budget is circa 2-3k for the tuning alone but it will be done in stages.

I assume stage 1 would be the usual: Exhaust and a filter?

Stage 2: Cams and a remap?

The car will be used for fast road and track days

M3O respond very well to turbo'ing but i assume you mean in an e30 so space is tight the m60 has more power & tourque out of the box.

So it would take big junk of money to get a m30 N/A to make m60 power, I am building an tuned m30 and it will be about 3k to get 280bhp out of it

Given the 400bhp gunni got out of a turbo m20 for about 3k do you really want to speend the money on an engine swap then more on tunning it

Well you will spend more money fitting an m60, so I guess you will have less money to tune it, a decat exhaust and a custom remap or standalone EFI will give a few more ponies, other than that every thing is more expensive ie 4 cams instead of 1, there are no cheap parts for the m60 while for the m30 you can pick up a set of s88 throttle bodies and an adaptor plate for a few hundred quid.

I've pretty much given up on the M60, it'll either be an M20B25, M30b35 or an M52.

Jason, I probably have it wrong, but the m62b44 after 99 is a vanos lump. I am pretty sure the heads are very similar to the m5 lump, albeit with massively tame cams and one throttle body compared to an m5's 8! :( I am not certain, but I wonder if the alpina cams would slot straight in, they got 340bhp with an extra 200cc as well... Pretty sure the exhaust manifold is identicle as well, but the exhaust from there backwards is definately different.

I suspect there is an easyish 40bhp 'lying' around in an m62b44 with Vanos, it is a shame mine doesn't have it! :(

Hi

If you have the dosh i know the man who builds the bmw v8 for the ascari gt cars and make about 500BHP N/A but cost well over 20k, also the m60 is used in offshore power boat racing in twin turbo form again 750bhp plus but the engines cost about the price of an new m3.

M5 is total different but use the bore spaces match so you could try the manifolds of a m5, also cat cams make a range of cams the m60

I wish I had the money, alas I am an impoverished uni student with his last exam tomorrow :(

This car is one to be kept standard anyway, it was more a suggestion for the OP to perhaps consider a later m62 if he was adament on a BMW v8. Problems arise with the fly by throttle though, whereas an early one has a throttle cable.

I don't want to spend 20k on an engine... well I do, but I can't ^^

If I went v8, it would probably be a 1UZ-FE now that i've seen the dimensions of the M60

OP, please excuse the slight hijack, but e21Jason, could you expand on your thoughts/experiences with this a little?

I have a fly by wire E32 M30B35 in my E30 and the EML throttle is a real PITA. I am starting to consider options for going back to cable throttle, and this S88 idea sounds good. Presumably this will need aftermarket management to work acceptably?

Martin.
