Just had my drive block paved and the guys finished it on Saturday so parked on ther until this morning. Came home tonight and spotted a saucer sized oil puddle!! Mrs not very impressed, let me tell you!!! Any way took car to get jet washed in engine bay, waited until the heat had dried the water off and inspected. I think i have traced the oil weep to the unit that the oil filter is fixed to, and it seems to be coming from a round shaped cylinder thing with some sort of headless bolt at the bottom....still with me on this???? :? My question is can this be tightened up, is it a seal, or can i block it up with some wonder gasket stuff?

This is a common fault, and BMW sell a repair kit for it.

BMW part number 11 42 9 059 338 - approx Ԛ£3

One thing worth mentioning, is that behind the aluminium plug/cover, is a very large spring. Be careful not to take an eye out when you remove the circlip that holds it in place.

It is possible to do it on the car, but much easier to remove the complete unit from the side of the engine (one big bolt through the middle, and the two oil cooler pipes), and do it on the bench.

If you decide to remove the unit, you will need to replace the main o-ring that seals it to the engine, the two small o-rings for the cooler pipes, and there's also an o-ring and an aluminium crush washer that seal the main bolt. Infact, the parts system shows two different sizes for the aluminium crush washer, but they are only about 15p each, so get one of each to avoid being stuck.

11 42 1 265 670 - Main o-ring - approx Ԛ£2.20
17 22 2 245 358 - Cooler pipe o-rings - approx 45p each - 2 required
11 42 1 714 764 - Main bolt o-ring - approx Ԛ£3
07 11 9 963 384 - Crush washer - approx 15p
07 11 9 963 441 - Crush washer - approx 15p

Cheers,

Ian.

This was subject to a recall in the early ninties. if the circlip holding it has no inner bits to grip then it has not been changed and has the faulty rubber ring. It is the pressure switch for the oil cooler by the way.

I changed this on mine BUT!! I must have done it wrong

The following day I was booting it off a roundabout accelerating past 60 (ooo errr) and the cap and spring shot out loosing nearly all my oil. There was a huge slick on the road. Stopped quick so engine was ok.

Maybe I was just rubbish when I did this repair.
