my viscous fan coupling on my m10 is knackerd but wen ever i try to undo the big bolt it just spins the pulley round on the fan belt is there an easy method of undoin this bolt??

also i hav heard that if i "lock" the coupling it will put too much strain on the water pump is this true ? i was gonna do it until i buy a new one

thanks

You are aware the viscous coupling is a left hand thread?

Any way do yourself a favour and pop down to halfrauds and get a 32mm fan spanner (If you haven't already got one, about Ԛ£5)

Leave the drive belt on the pully to help hold the pump steady, then place spanner on nut and strike the spanner, hopefully the coupling will release quite easily.

Best of luck

The other way to do it is to use a big (log) screwdriver with a flat blade. Position it on the side of the nut that needs to go down to undo it and whack it with a hammer... the shock is enough to undo the nut and it works a treat...for me anyway!
