i took the injector rail off today to swap the injectors. unfortunately one of the rubber o-rings was stuck in the manifold and when the injector came out the o-ring pulled the tip off - and look where it bloody ended up!

Image

look how much cr*p ended up in the inlet port when i removed the manifold! still, at least the valve was closed :clin:

it's sitting idling now which is a relief, but this was supposed to have taken 30 minutes!

Why were you changing the injectors mate ?

335 or M535 ?

I wouldn't worry to much about the little bits of crap so long as they wernt metalic ?

I've got some spare injector O rings here if you need them ?

swapping injectors from m535i to 335, still cr*ap power above 5k on the e30.

the compressions on the 335 engine are all over the shop which isn't a great start, but i don't see how this would affect the high-rpm power. none are particularly low, they just vary.

thinking i might just bang an e34 lump in there, there's a couple of breakers on ebay. i'd just need to re-make the engine mounts.

coming to stevenage?

Yes,see the other thread mate

Might be worth seeing if you can find some where that will do you a leak down test, they should be able to tell you if its piston rings or valves leaking.

If its piston rings then that E34 engine makes sense,if it's valves then whip the head off and see if you can lap the valve seats ?

What sort of color are your plugs ?

Do you mainly do shortish trips in it ?

plugs are spot on, reassuring sandy colour as per haynes manual. doesn't smoke or use much oil.

what's odd is that 4 cylinders gave a higher than expected reading and 2 gave a normal reading. so i assumed the gauge overeads and that there's 4 cylinders ok and 2 lower compression.

however then i tested the m535i (which runs perfect, low miles, fsh, been an auto most of its life :D , no smoke, no oil usage, makes superb power right the way through) and that gave the same comp reading as the 2 lower cylinders on the 335.

both tested with all plugs out, good battery, throttle wide open.

maybe the e30 engine's really coked up inside? i though maybe those 4 exhaust cam lobes were worn and weren't letting the pressure out - but i can't see that having an effect at cranking speed unless they weren't opening at all!

regardless, i can't see how the compressions would affect the high rpm power only - the engine makes really good power from 1k-5k rpm as you know - the faster the engine revs the less time there is for gas to leak out so why would only the last 1.5k rpm be affected so much?

in short, fcuk knows... all i know is there's an m30b35 on the bay for Ԛ£35 at the mo! so i'm not too worried either way.

Giles - they go cheap because they're mostly from autos. i'm in the lucky position of having the manual box, prop, clutch and flywheel all working perfectly, (these parts swap between e28 and e34/32) so i can just crane in an engine nobody wants from an auto.

there's lots about because the auto boxes break a lot and the cars usually then get scrapped.

then i buy them :D

got to blow this one up first though!

Hope fully not on the way to the Stevenage meet ! :clin:

If they are going that cheap i can see why it's not worth messing with your old one.

Would you bother switching the ECU/Sensors/Wiring over to the E34 set up ?

yeah just chuck the whole lot in.

if i swap the engine i'm only bloody doing it once so i'd make sure i saw it running then just take absolutely everything.

the only thing stopping me is having to modify the engine mounts.

i don't think it's going to let go imminently though! it feels pretty strong

good thought andy - but the injectors are pretty much off the check list as it doesn't run any different with the ones from the m535 installed which runs mint.

i am wondering if the cam is worn on that engine. don't know if i can check this without removing it though.

still, i reckon if the mechanics are playing up then it's best to divert all attention to bolting bodykits on
