Cool project you have started! A very lucky find as well for a pre facelift what with the condition of the shell, a decent colour, the fact its a 2dr and a non sun roof shell to boot!

I to will be on the hunt for a rot free 2dr prefacelift shell in a couple of months, lets just hope i'm as lucky as you!

Thanks for the comments Barry, i am more than pleased with how good she has turned out to be, even with going to look at the car you can never fully tell what you've got until doing something like this. As soon as i saw it on the zone i just had to have it if it looked as good as it sounded due to the decent colour and lack of sunroof.

Not been down to it today but spend a couple of hours removing the interior from the Moredoor ready to sell. Originally i was going to use the carpet from that car as well as it was black but turns out is has just been dyed that and was blue so that just got ripped out in the end and took down the tip. The dash is out and will be used in the 2 door.

Here's a few pics of why the moredoor is now just a donor car.

Rust starting on the bulkhead;


Looks like there's been a bit of action on the drivers side as the floor is a bit bent up;


There is also rust on the rear bulkhead where the battery cable runs through, the parcel shelf has been butchered to fit 6x9s and there is quite a bit of rust in the boot, some of which is in rather odd places.

Treated the 2 door to some new rear lights via ebay this evening as well

Managed to get down to the car and gave it a t-cut and polish, looks so much better just for that. The couple of rust patches are being checked out tomorrow and so will hopefully sort out a date to get it in and sort those out as thats putting a bit of a stop to things at the moment.

The engine will be coming out tomorrow, hopefully it will of had a bid or to by the time the auction finishes on Saturday as i need it gone to keep the old man placid.

While i was down there i gave these a trial fit;



Really like them but the painted stripe will have to go as its not the right colour and i think i would prefer them without anyway. I've got a couple of sets of smoked repeaters and some smoked Hellas so though these would go quite well with those.

Very nice shell fella, especially for the disintegrating pre-facelift variety. It's nice to see one in such good original condition. Don't it feel great to have solid rear wheel arches

Cheers fellas, the strips will definately be coming off just need to get some thinners. I think the will look their best once the kit is on and all the chrome has vanished.

Should be laying my hands on a slipper tomorrow as well

Engine came out yesterday, all went nice and smoothly until i found the engine crane wouldn't lift high enough to get the engine out over the front of the car, luckily my mate was giving my a hand and since its only a baby 4 pot we managed to lift it the final few inches to get it out.

Only found a couple of scabs along the front panel and the one i'd already seen on the chassis rail so nothing to worry about then, just a rub back and blow over should suffice.






Today i picked up some dechrome popout brinze tint rear windows which i never thought i would be able to find so dead chuffed with them.

Dropped the exhaust off today (will be forsale for pennies later) and all the heat shields ready to remove the gearbox and prop but the prop to diff bolt weren't playing ball so hopefully after a night of soaking in WD40 should help.

Gearbox and prop came out nice and easy on Sunday.

Had my bodywork man come and have a look, he couldn't believe the condition, was pretty jelous as he's just restored a Mk3 Capri 3.0S which made any rotten E30 i've seen look like a minter! He's given me the go ahead to get most the car back together just leaving the dash/trim out to do the battery tray and same for the sill, both jobs i can easily leave until very late on.

This weekend i think i'll be giving the engine bay and other such areas a real good clean and touch up where necessary and then get the fuel pumps swapped and some of the exterior trim reattached.

Spent a bit of time on the car today tarting up the engine bay, here's the results;

Still on the hunt for a load of parts for the interior and also still had no luck finding a genuine paint BMW rear bumper for the kit but on the other hand i have got hold of a few things didn't expect to such as the headlining and open rear quaters in the right colour.

I'm hoping to book a few days off work in the next couple of weeks to get the engine in, there may be a glimmer of a chance this couple make Gaydon but really i want it done for Thorseby, but i think either way that'll be without the kit and god knows what interior, Houndstooth Recaros finger crossed

Had a few weekends away from the car so no real progress all i've done in the last few weeks is the black roof lining which is a massive improvement.

I've finally managed to get hold of the rear bumper i've been after thanks to Rav.

Today though i have done some graft, dropped the engine out of the breaker and subframe out of the 2 door and into the breaker so i can get it towed back up home and out my Dads way.



Going to spend tomorrow fitting a new clutch and flywheel and giving the engine and gearbox a real good clean and check over to see what might need replacing while the engine is out and easy to work on.

Some of the goodies are just about visible in the pics below, was also plesantly surprised to find the it is also fitted with nice new eccentric control arm bushes to go along with everything else.

Managed to get the engine in today, looks so much more at home than the M10' Was a bit of a pain getting the subframe lined up with the chassis.

Well it's been quite a while since i've updated this thread, been having a whole lot of headache with getting the engine running, still isn't . Had many suggestions and plenty of advice but still no closer to solving it, got some new flywheel sensors to fit this weekend thanks to Zaust but i have little hope these will sort it as they are only being replaced as i was a bit heavy handed removing the old ones to check the flywheel tab was present and correct.

The suspension has all been fitted but still needs to settle a bit really as i would expect it to be sitting a little lower and i've also got a 3.64 LSD on there now just like a Tech 1 Sport should have . I finally got hold of a decent enough houndstooth interior to tide me over until i have the highback recaros retrimmed, just a small hole in one bolster but couldn't ask for any better for the price and a proper tech 1 sport rear bumper that i will be able to paint polaris without the worry of it flaking off.

The de-chrome is all in place as well although i am not happy with the door frames at all, too many kinks in it but these are NLA from BMW and i've not come across a decent secondhand pair , also tempted to buy new gutter trims but money is better spent else where at the moment.

Something i am very happy about is the choice of wheels i've got now, got hold of some 16" Hartges as you can see thanks to BMW-MAD (who i also got the LSD off) and i've had my OZ's refurbed that were on my touring which look great.



Before and after rear suspension was swapped, fronts was done with the engine swap.

This weekend i'll get the new sensors fitted and have another good play with trying to get the engine fired up.

Just thought i'd dig this thread from the depths of the zone, seeing all these other projects on the go at the moment is making realise i really need to get back on this.

Haven't really touched this much over the last few months since i had to take it out of my Dads garage to make way for his new car, plus i've been doing quite a lot of overtime to save up the pennies to spend on this and an attempt to save for o house deposit

Current state of play with the car is I still couldn't get it running so set about replacing the flywheel pickup sensors, however I can get the replacement to fit into the hole in the bellhousing and since access to the hole is very restricted i think i'm going to have to drop the gearbox and clean up the hole . Next step after that will be to go back over a recheck and test the wiring again, will no doubt be asking many questions on that when it comes round to it. Zaust has advised me that since i couldn't get it to fire though even when bridging relays to get fuel and spark the injector could well be dead.

Work will hopefully recommence next month, hopefully the break will have done me good as it was winding me up before

I already want another project One that I can play around with an not actually have to worry about it going back on the road that day to get to work.

Well if it's not running by the summer i think i deserve a pretty good slap!

Once it's running it shouldn't take long to get it on the road as i have most the major parts i need to finish it off and the body work required won't take long, anything else can be added later like the rear discs and retrimmed Recaro's.

Any tips on dropping the gearbox would be good!

Why dont you change the loom/ECU to a later type? You wouldnt need to take the gearbox out at least

That has crossed my mind ages ok but then i'd forgot about doing that. Possibly going to be a little less involved and give me better management. Just got to make sure TDC is set correctly on the front pully haven't i? Should be easy enough to get all the parts quite cheap shouldn't it as well
