i've just changed the water pump on my 325i and now have noticed the rather large oil leak. is there anything obvious i may have disturbed in the process?

i have a feeling that the tail-lift on Mr AA's van may have smacked the sump on the 80 mile home journey. (the front spoiler lip thingy had been...). possibly breaking the sump gasket seal...

anything else obvious anyone can think of?

can you see where the leak is coming from, i.e is there any evidence of oil on the front or side of the engine above the height of the sump gasket?

Check the pipes onto the oil cooler are still tight and the pipes going to the oil pump are all good

i can't see too clearly. it's all a mess! i'm goint to get under there today (in the sodding rain!) and remove the undertray thingy for a clearer view.

it seems to be front end... i didn't think to check the oil cooler. i'll give all of the pipes a tweak.

sods law though... it's supposed to be taking us on holiday tomorrow. a 250 mile drive! luckily we have a spare E30! it's a 320i 2 door but has leather, lekky everything, abs, air con....... kinda makes up for the less space compared to the tourer... it's just so nice to have 170bhp when you're on the motorway with a heavy load!

well, i found what it was... a cracked sump!!! :x

i've worked out that the tail-lift thingy on the AA recovery van must have clouted the sump several times and broken it... in the following photos you can see the repeated dents in the middle of the front edge!

i've now going to get the AA to pay for a new sump, loads of oil etc, a new front panel with painting (now bent) and a new splitter/spoiler/lip thingy + all labout etc...! that'll serve them right for ballsing up! when i broke down i told them that i had checked and found the water pump had just seized. not repairable on the roadside!!! i asked them to send a flatbed as the car i lowered. specifically not a normal van, bike or a van with tail-lift. so they made me wait 2 hours for a normal van who couldn't help so then went and i had to wait another 2.5 hours for yet another useless twat, this time in a van with a tail-lift! i had to go so accepted the lift home. 80 miles back at 40mph max as the taillift was so low... still a big repair bill!

not amused!!!!!!!!!!!

that said, i've just repared it with a petrol tank / crankcase repairing kit!!! seems to be holding so no oily splats for a while at least!!!!

have a look anyway.... it's grim viewing! http://photobucket.com/albums/v382/gare ... =1&multi=6

we're off to Snettisham Village in Norfolk. just done a route map and it's a bit less than i thought... 170 miles.

a hire car would be good if i get them to pay for it! my mate had someonw pull out on his calibra and he got a new astra gsi turbo courtisy car!!! it had only done 70 miles!!!! that got a real thrashing... just for being vauxhall!
