also going back to clives friday so he can re read the fault codes... the engine speed signal was implausible last time... so if that fault come back its time for a new crank sensor!!! bmw have reserved me one to pick up friday... how nice of them @ £72!!

My E39 kept doing this,it turned out to be cheap bulbs,i know it sounds mad but i changed them for BMW sourced bulbs and the problem dissappeared. When i asked my indy specialist he said it was to do with the rating of the bulb, normally i would smell a rat but after changing the bulbs the problem was gone, and still is ok as one of the guys i work with bought my E39 and all is well.
I would try this first, whats it going to cost,a couple of quid?
Just an idea.

i will pick up the crank sensor today... i fail to see how changeing bulbs is going to help with the engine speed signal being implausible... the crank sensor reads the engine speed??
