Just wondering what peoples thoughts are on the e39 M5? Has anyone on here owned one/run one? The problem is, if i was to buy the one i'm looking at, the sport would have to go to finance a car for the wife

I thought the vanos issues weren't as bad on the M5's? not like the e36 evos?

I also know it's the Vanos seals that tend to go.
http://www.beisansystems.com/ do replacement vanos seals and they do work! I know as I changed the seals on my 7 series and it done the trick..

that is a lot of money and work, its ok if the wife is on your side for, mine was for the m30 conversion in the end when i told her it was cheaper to do it my way or spend £15k on an M3

A friend of mine owns a E39 M5. Its an awesome piece of kit. He fitted better rear boxes, cross over pipe, induction kit and 155mph limiter removed. It goes really really well and sounds the part now we got 170mph out of it on the autobahn. But he does have extremely deep pockets and the M5 has been expensive to maintain. After one track day at goodwood it ended up costing him £1500 repair bill. That was new tyres, wheel bearings and new brakes all fitted at BMW like all the work he has ever had done. GSF I dont think can really help you with many parts. Vanos issues no he hasnt had a problem with that. During the winter a couple of years back he had a sensor go down which controlled the ABS and the TC, but that was just fun!!
Basically if you do have deep pockets like my mate and I do mean DEEP I would buy one in a flash but unlike the E30 sport most of the parts you will require are main dealer. I think he bought the car when they were £20k but keeping it up to scratch is about £20k again.

That's a lovely sport and appears to be worthy of a higher price if you did sell!
I know which I'd rather have but as already said I wouldn't want to sell a limb every time it needed some work

The sport does require some work, which is reflected in the price. Does anyone own an e30 with a 24v lump in around my area? I'd be interested to get the feel of an e30 with a modern engine?

I'm not sure of any others in the north, Omi may have one but i can't remember, he is in Darlington.

E39 is certainly faster and more comfortable, but you can forget about running one on an E30 budget.

I do feel torn though, i always set out to keep the sport as a standard example, but it just dosen't offer enough performance

Say you sell the Sport for £3k, that money could buy you a straight e30 shell and a ropey e36 M3, so saving you from molesting the sport and paying out on top for an S50. Plus you could probably make quite a bit back selling the bits that you don't need, further financing the conversion costs.he30 wrote:Yeah, damilerman's at the rolling road day in Scunny tomorrow, will be seeking a ride/go in the chariot! could be interestingbillgatese30 wrote:I have the s50 powered beast, I'm only 10 mins south of newcastle, beemerlad has the m50 beast and live just north of york but it isn't finished yet, daimler man is in lincoln but I'm not sure how far away from you that is

Well if you are not sure, I can give you one advice. Go for a E39 BMW 540i with a manual gearbox and upgrade it with a bit stiffer suspension. The reason for this, is that a 540i isnt as expencive to run or buy like an M5 - but it isnt the real thing!

it depends how mechanically minded you are. surely the running costs of an M5 would be kept down severely if you just maintained the bugger? the only issues are the insurance and tax i reckon. ill go down the M5 route if i were you ;)

Tax not an issue as it's an 01 and neithers insurance at the grand old age of 36/full no claims and a clean ticket! Not mechanically minded at all though
That aside i can see why i'm craving more power! the sports been on the rolling rd today ands only putting out 145bhp!
i'm sure another 30bhp will make the world of difference! just need to find out why

Listen to this beast, takes a while before he starts giving it some stick though:

The sound is quite frankly one of the most brutally sexy i've ever heard, i'm sure you will agree.

nice sound coming from that beast, i dont like the rear arches much, but i suppose it needs to be very wide to get all the power down.

E39 M5s are fantastic cars but make sure you spend quite a bit for a good one with full BMW service history so you know its been looked after. And get it serviced by BMW/specialist. 8k spent on ours in january. Only went in for an MoT and thats a mint condition le mans blue 2001.
