It turned out to be a fault with the factory BMW alarm / immobiliser behind the glovebox which is linked to the the ignition coil.
Once it was by-passed (I never used it, or even knew it was there at all to be honest!) the ecu realised there was power to the coil and woke up giving me my sparks and fuel supply back!

Yeah.
I NEVER would have found it, I had a professional auto electrician come round (I can't really do electrics!) and it took him over an hour to find it.
He only charged me £30 though!
I thought it was quite cool, the only tool I saw him use today was a bit of old wire with an old bulb in the middle of it!
